You might also try to bypass your ISP's proxy server

Posted on 09/23/2001 8:44:47 AM PDT by SlickWillard

The DNS problem may be caused by a proxy server at your ISP - your proxy server could be misconfigured with the bad DNS information. If you want to connect directly to FreeRepublic, you will need to bypass your proxy server. Here is how you would do this with recent versions of Internet Explorer:

Tools
Internet Options...
Connections

Either:     Dial-up and Virtual Private Network settings
-or-     LAN Settings...
BE VERY CAREFUL what you do here, especially if you are making some kind of Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to your place of business. VPN connections can be very difficult to configure. Write down any changes you make so that you can undo them if necessary.

It is usually easier to change the HOSTS file and hard-code in the ip address for www.freerepublic.com.

To find your hosts file you should search for HOSTS

There is no extension on the file and you can edit with notepad. Remember to always make a backup first!

Simplest solution: skip DNS entirely

Just get onto FR by directly specifying the IP address in your URL: http://206.112.97.70

Right, but I believe that if Internet Explorer is set use a proxy server, it won't bother to check the HOSTS file.
