Check out the University of Texas' Perry-Castenada map library...it's online, I just can't remember the URL. Seach for "maps" and "Perry-Castenada" and you'll find it.

Actually, #4. Thanks for the link, tho. PCL is one of my main resources when I go kit-bashing a wargame together.

Hey thanks.

"Kit-bashing" ... I like it.

Alas ...

(like Economist_MA's of last night):

reasonably close to a random walk ...
volatility scales roughly with the square root of time.

... I'm not sure I understand what you mean     =)

"Kit-bashing" originally comes from movie production, where various science-fiction shows would use pieces from several commercial model kits to make new spaceships and the like. I use the term to indicate where I take an established boardgame system, any convenient order of battle I can find, and a hastily-drawn map (or, in this case, a game map that consists of hexagons superimposed over a digital image of the terrain). Presto! Instant wargame. It may not be playable, but that's what development work is for.

From movie production? No joke?

And here I had WWI British or my friend Paddy in mind!

Thanks for the link, Romulus!
