NEW YORK - By now, even those who love Ziad Jarrah are confused about the truth of his 26-year-old life.
The Lebanese student, says the FBI, helped hijack United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco and aim it toward Washington, part of the deadly terrorist plot that unfolded Sept. 11.

Where did his "poor" Lebanese family get the $2,000 a month to send him in America?

From the article:
Instead, Ziad Samir Jarrah was born May 11, 1975, the only son in a prosperous, educated family.

I'm sure his family will continue to get "blood money" from terrorist sources as payment for his "martyrdom."
Perhaps as a deterent for future terrorists these families should be rounded up for indefinite detention preferably working on pig farms.

"Instead, Ziad Samir Jarrah was born May 11, 1975, the only son in a prosperous, educated family. His father, Samir, 62, is a local government official; his mother, Nasisa, 57, is a schoolteacher.
Growing up in the Bekaa Valley - a rich swath of green fields between two mountain ranges - Ziad Jarrah wanted for little. The area produces much of Lebanon's fruit and vegetables and is also home to many of its well-to-do. "

- Hatred of freedom. This seems to be the "official" motivation.
- Hatred of decadence. Some of the terrorists took part in that decadence, but they could have rationalized that they were going to heaven no matter what.
- New holy war. It's seems likely that the terrorists knew that their actions could trigger a new holy war between Islam and the West. They would have known that America would want revenge and were hoping that a large American attack would trigger a broad Islamic-based counterattack and start a world war.
- Ongoing holy war. They attacked us out of their perceived religious duty to convert or conquer all infidels.
- Revenge against America. They were the Islamic equivalents of Tim McVeigh attempting to get revenge for our foreign policy.
- Reduced American influence. This would include removing our troops from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries, reducing or eliminating our support for Israel and Egypt, and ending our sanctions against Iraq. The terrorists would have known that we would not give in right away, but might have been hoping for a long term change.
- Fame for themselves or their families
- Peer pressure, brainwashing, blackmail.

This guy didn't look like the photos of the other highjackers. He wouldn't have aroused much suspician.

Our local paper had a similar profile of Mohammed Atta over the weekend. His family is similarly educated and upper middle class. They couldn't reconcile the son they knew with the information coming out about his activities. Personal habits such as drinking and fear of flying were inconsistent, as were his overall values and personality. It really makes me wonder how much of this represents the intensity of training and how much is denial on the part of the families.

I wonder if this man could have been kidnapped and killed for his papers, but he did apparently attend flight schools and is now missing. I guess it's likely he got sucked into some religious Islamic group and had his brain washed.
It's interesting that even Muslims seem to think becoming a religious Muslim would incline someone to do a hijacking, there's something about the religion itself, the Koran that seems to affect the minds of those who get too into it.

He looks more Euro than the others. Other hijackers were a lot more Arab looking.

Think Patty Hurst and Berkley! If bin Laden and Atta had volunteered to HELP the poor with all of their wealth instead of killing the imperial Yankee, they might have made a real difference instead of making a war.
College kids that hate their lives are the same in USA and the middle east. Hate Hate Hate and no end to the finger pointing as long as they don't actually help someone.
What are the odds that our tree huggers will be called terrorists? When will the people burning college research centers be called terrorists? When will they become part of the underground network of terrorists, just like all those "good Kids" that killed the Brinks drivers, etc. etc.
There are more "good kids" names on a black granite wall and even more that served with honor than all the protesters at all the EVENTS on the mall combined.

There are many "good kids" in the world who lack productive purpose in their lives. Idle hands are the devil's workshop, the old saying goes.
I agree many privileged young people are carrying hatred. Many are more bored and lacking in purpose than hate-filled, but the net effect can be similar if they fall in with the wrong groups.

It is possible that only two of the hijacking team knew the ultimate purpose. Jarrah may have been recruited as muscle and 'possible flight help' under the guise of embarassing the US but he wasn't privy to the ultimate purpose of suicide. Just because most or all had flight training doesn't mean they were all told the ultimate purpose of their hijacking missions. To handle the teams this way is also less likely to have glitch, such as one who decides to not follow through and has a consciences. It is possible that as the news of the first two planes into the WTC aired, other terrorists in other teams suddenly realized they had been set up. It does appear the plans for 9/11 included many more planes to be used as weapons.

One more aspect to this: the planes were fueled for cross country flight, with enough fuel to cross the ocean; flights take off, make a reverse direction turn which appears to the unsuspecting team members like the normal turn back toward the ocean direction they've been led to believe is the right course, and only at the last seconds would they have any inkling that they'd been had by the Attas of the teams.

Let's not forget the evidence suggest this "nice boy" was nearly responsible for flattening Capitol Hill.
I hope he's enjoying his new "digs".

After seeing the photograph of this young man, it is so hard to picture him as a committed terrorist. He had such a nice smile; I can detect no hint of hatred in his face. I hope he was not murdered and his identity used by others. If he was, indeed, a terrorist and murderer, I can't argue with the truth. It's just hard to believe; he really looks like a fine young man.
