A University of Missouri-Columbia peace and justice organization will engineer the schools first student-led demonstration tomorrow afternoon against President George W. Bushs declaration of "war" against terrorism. Students for Progressive Action is organizing the event, which will take place at noon on Lowry Mall on the MU campus. Mid-Missouri Peaceworks and Mid-Missouri Fellowship of Reconciliation are co-sponsoring the demonstration.
Along with music and an open-mic forum, several speakers, including Lana Jacobs of St. Francis House, Mark Haim of Peaceworks and Charles Liteky, a decorated war hero turned peace activist, will address the participants.
"Its to show, to raise awareness that there are nonviolent alternatives," said Crystal Hartman, president of the progressive action organization. "Its to try to unite people who want peace instead of war. We dont have to go start bombing Afghanistan to find a solution."
Hartman said the courts of law, not public opinion, should determine guilt in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.
"They have to come to the conclusion that Osama bin Laden is guilty," she said. "Go after him and try to get real justice. It doesnt give the U.S. the right to start a war and kill thousands of innocent civilians."
Liteky, who received a Medal of Honor from Congress in 1986, also will give a lecture at 8 tonight in 204 Neff Hall on the MU campus.
He ultimately renounced the medal in protest of U.S. intervention in Central America.
The former Army chaplain has studied U.S. foreign and domestic policy, and he will talk about his journey from priest and war hero to activist, as well as address the recent attacks.
"In the last few years, Ive spoken frequently to college students," Liteky said in a statement. "I encourage them to think for themselves, to be honest with themselves and to get involved. In my view, the youth of today have the mightiest of missions."
Litekys lecture is free and open to the public.

Really, all Bin Laden wants is a hug and a few of those yellow smiley face buttons to pass around at the next terrorist pot-luck luncheon and book circle.

The funny thing here is.........not a shot has been fired at any civilian by the US. Yet, the Taleban is becoming isolated and on the verge of extinction. In shades of Reagan, showing military might may just prevent any large scale "war" in the traditional sense of the word.

These people don't have any idea what life is about. They skip class, get drunk, and get laid. Those of us who played sports or were forced to meet academic standards and had a better grip on reality, although maybe strayed occasionally. This sector more likely than not believes Clinton when he tells them how he tried to destroy bin Laden. And this sector is eligible first for the draft.

I wonder how long it will be before these demonstrators have posters that say "Solidairity with the Taliban"?

"This sector more likely than not believes Clinton when he tells them how he tried to destroy bin Laden."
Well, where were they then? They're just a bunch of doofuses. Military efforts are only wrong when instigated by a Republican administration.
"And this sector is eligible first for the draft."
--where they will learn a valuable lesson if it comes to that.
All the peace freaks think that sitting around at candlelight vigils and singing "Where have all the flowers gone?" is really going to change something?
I think we need to enforce the rules on financial aid right now too, and start checking to see if there are any drug arrests on these dopes. Get them out of the liberal indoctrination centers that universities have become, and learn what life is about. No more mamma gov'mint nursing them.

I went to this school. Good old Alma Mater... but in response to something you said, Tumbleweed:
"They skip class, get drunk, and get laid."
in regards to the students who protest for peace. Well, I have to tell you that I think this sounds like college students everywhere. Wasn't there a thread going on when all the press attention was focused on Jenna Bush about how we all (maybe not all) had a wild time in college, partied and generally enjoyed ourselves? It seems to me that that's part of what college is about; trying things out, even pacifism. Let them get it out of their systems now.
Some people take longer to awaken than others, but this may turn out to be Generation Y's "Good War"

This is exactly why the voting age should still be 21.

My good old alma mater too. Was Mark Haim smelling things up when you attended there? That guy is a con man - he bilks college kids of their parents money and tells them he's doing such and such great things for peace and justice, but all he does is smoke grass, get blitzed and organize rallies. That is, when he's not trying to relieve co-eds of their undergarments and what's left of their virtue. The man is absolute scum. I worked with Campus Police when I was there and there was bunco investigation against him while I was there. Unfortunately, they couldn't get any good evidence, and as far as I know he's still conning kids at MU.
