China's cooperation with the United States in its war against terrorism comes at a price, say analysts.

It's part of a long-term strategy to change American policy on Taiwan, according to a report in the South China Morning Post today.

Zhang Mingqing, a spokesman for China's Taiwan Affairs Office, said yesterday it remained to be seen if the recent attacks would have any effect on U.S. policy on Taiwan, but, according to the report, added, "It should still be examined."

Speaking after last week's meeting with Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said, "There was absolutely no suggestion of a quid pro quo."

"Through work on more common issues such as the elimination of terrorism, we hope the U.S. can understand Chinese positions which will decrease the possibility of conflict on Taiwan," said Niu Jun, Chinese diplomacy expert and professor at the Institute of International Studies in Beijing University.

Throughout the terrorism crisis, China has maintained its Taiwan policy of reunification and the threat of military force if Taiwan declares independence.

Chicoms have lost it.

Taiwan, as they have approached it for the last 50 years is gone to them forever.

The ChiCom's "right to use force" would be an attack on a scale 10 times the magnitude of the World Trade Center attack.

No one can accept that, nor can threats of it be ignored as empty or theoretical or rhetoric. Even if the ChiComs are not serious about an actual attack, it is no longer the sort of thing to even talk about.

Taiwan has a modern and large military. They have intelligence operations as well. The ChiCom view is and we have appeased them in it, that there can be no official contact between Taiwan and the US.

But now such a make believe approach is obsolete.

We need ports, bases, logisitical and military support. Taiwan has these. We will use them if necessary.

One China policy is dead. In times of peace, make believe diplomatic fictions might work (or be believed to work -- this didn't). In time of war it is useless.

The actual situation is that to participate as part of the coalition or alliance China will have to end all threats to Taiwan. They are with us or with the terrorists.

Check out these links as well:

Basically, the ChiComs still want something in return for their support. Most of all they want us (and Taiwan) to roll over and let them do as they please.

To China, America is a terrorist nation. The reason for that is because we are a clear threat to the CCP's power.

hey, china, just go along or you're next: for arming iraq, which in turn arms the terrorist networks. not to mention the sudan, building chemical and biological weapons factories as we speak, with chinese assistance, for the terrorist networkds. in short, china, if you want to remain a player on the world scene, do your part. we know about your 'sleepers' in america and are watching them and you very, very closely.

anyone that thinks taiwan doesn't have nuclear capabilities is making a very, *very* large and costly mistake in estimating their response capabilities.
