Losing Control at Handgun Control?
Roll Call ^ | 09/27/2001 | Ed Henry

Posted on 09/27/2001 6:55:48 AM PDT by Pokey78

While one airliner after another slashes their payrolls, the best-known anti-gun lobby in Washington laid off 14 people Tuesday.

Officials at the Brady Campaign, formerly known as Handgun Control, confirmed to HOH yesterday that they cut nearly 20 percent of their staff this week.

"It's a difficult time around here," said spokesman Brendan Daly. "Like a lot of other nonprofit organizations, we've been hit by the downturn in the economy."

Daly said the group has also been affected by the terrorism in America, which has led to overflow contributions to relief efforts. "The terrorist attacks have rightly focused people on helping the victims, but that has a direct impact on our fundraising."

The fact that gun control has not been at the top of the Congressional agenda has also not helped the group founded by Jim and Sarah Brady after Mr. Brady nearly died from a gunshot wound during the 1981 assassination attempt on President Ronald Reagan. Among their triumphs was getting the Brady bill signed into law, which resulted in a five-day waiting period on handgun purchases.

"They've known some of these people for a very long time," Daly said of the couple. "But I think they're holding up."

I know this is a sad side effect of the events of September 11, but I'll be the NRA's membership is growing.

Can't say I'm sad to hear about HCI's financial woes.

You mean all we needed to put the anti-gunners in the red was an economic downturn?

Hope the NRA is holding steady - I recently renewed the gift membership I send to my father every year...

Go join the International Defensive Pistol association and then go compete in one of their matches...you'll make great new friends, have a blast, and learn a very useful skill or sharpen old skills. I'm SURE they have a website if you do a search.

I don't think Jim has had anything to do with those HCI bandits. He was a good republican and a Sigma Chi.

Too honorable to play a rational part it their drivel.

In the face of a WAR about to be fought at least partially on our home soil, and with our nation crawling with enemy agents OR terrorists....I would hope that the American people see gun control for the sham...the inherent danger to our freedom that it really is. Wait until a lawfully armed citizen stops an attack. That should send the gun control movement to the bottom of the sea. Glub Glub buh bye!

In fact now is the time to really push the notion of making concealed firearms permits a FEDERAL matter of reciprocity between states based on the 2nd Amendment (of course) and the 14th Amendment's "Full Faith and Credit" clause. There is serious talk of arming pilots. Why NOT extend the same courtesy to millions of more highly trained and practiced civilians...remember that according to the writings of the Founding Fathers, we are ALL in the militia!

Hey Sarah, Get a Job! When JJ gets back, give him a call. I'm sure he could find a place for someone as important as you on his staff.

Methinks that people who would have sent money to HCI are now taking that money to their local gun store and purchasing a firearm. :-)

"...Too honorable to play a rational part it their drivel."

He wasn't too honorable to actively campaign for Chuck Schumer's gun-control campaign for the Senate.

I saved an article from the New York Times that shows honorable Jim in his wheelchair and with his cane--on the stage shaking Schumer's hand---to the side is a large sign that says "242,000 FELONS STOPPED BY THE BRADY BILL." [NY Times. 29 Oct 98, page A27].
