[history]
Before he spoke his words of war for the world to hear, George W. Bush wanted to pray in private with the ordained of all faiths. It was hours before the most fateful speech of his life. Twenty-seven clergymen had been invited to meet with him. The chairs in the Roosevelt Room of the White House were arranged in a circle, prayer-meeting style. But when he walked into the room and took a seat, no one dared sit beside him for fear of seeming presumptuous.

But except for Britains Tony Blair (who flew to Washington for briefings and to sit in the Gallery beside Laura Bush), it wasnt clear which countries would answer an American call for men, materiel and diplomatic muscle. Not to nit-pick too much, but I think the Aussies actually beat the Brits to committing men to the effort, even offering to place them under U.S. command. Still, the UK's committment was a welcome reassurance.

Wow! Does anyone else remember that the Newsweek issue on the stands 9-11 carried the cover with the book claiming Bush was an accidental President? Talk about bad timing! Probably sold two copies. Now the media lemmings are fawning all over the most popular President in living memory. Does this mean Newsweek finally gave W an "up" arrow??

What an amazingly unbiased piece from
Newsweak. It took no jibes, stated facts, and cast no aspersions. In fact, in many places, the language was quite flattering. I liked the part where Karen Hughes expressed her doubts about getting The Speech drafted that day. "By 7." Two words that held zero ambiguity. The words of a man in charge.
I don't know the gal who wrote this with Fineman, but it's one of his better efforts. They could have easily left out the Chirac quote. But they didn't, and it's a powerful quote.
Frankly, I'm impressed.

Yes, President Bush finally received an up arrow in Newsweek's Conventional Wisdom.

I feel that urgency to be prepared so much. Thanks for the reminder to not only be prepared physically, but also spiritually and mentally.
To: Wright is right!
Martha Brant writes a weekly column for Newsweek on the West Wing (press.) She can be quite good, but does feel the need to jab President Bush in some articles. Not in this one though.

Thanks for posting this, for some reason it brought tears to my eyes. He is there for a reason, and I have complete faith in him.

An unsneering, well-written, informative article about a Republican President in Newsweak...
Would someone be so good as to post the flying pigs?

"Yes, President Bush finally received an up arrow in Newsweek's Conventional Wisdom."
So that makes them how far behind us?

I'll try and find some flying pigs. I've seen a few this past week myself. ;-)

It's time for Howard Fineman to get his head out and have some positive, or at least non-negative, things to say about W.

I thank you.

Bumping a fine article. Howard came on board last week with his article in which he called President Bush
"our George, a boyish dragon-slayer with a helmet of graying hair."I bought a hard copy of that issue which I am saving for posterity!!
