The AlShamal Islamic Bank in Sudan has been hacked by an organization that calls themselves Young Intelligent Hackers Against Terror. A German businessman named Kim Schmitz who had earlier put a $10M bounty on Bin Laden formed the group.

Kim Schmitz claims that the group successfully has extracted data on the accounts of the Al Qaeda terrorist organization and its leader Osama bin Laden. He explained that a "checkpoint firewall 1 vulnerability," made it possible to access the bank's intranet.

IGNORANT QUESTION: Can the FBI use information that it has received, but which was obtained by the source through illegal means?

Or is the fact that the illegality took place outside the U.S. a mitigating factor?

(Don't laugh: The SCOTUS has repeatedly held for example that people indicted in the U.S., who were literally KIDNAPPED in foreign countries and brought to the U.S. for trial, did not have their civil rights violated because it didn't occur on U.S. soil).

And then they decided to announce it to the world—including the terrorists?

Brilliant.

The hackers should have transferred all the $$$ in the account(s) to the relief agencies in NYC.

Sounds like this announcement was meant to be one of those chain letters. You know, copy it and send to 10 friends for good luck and maybe we'll really find an end to Bin Laden's money trail!

Plots within plots. Telling him we hacked the AlShamal Islamic Bank in Sudan tells him that there aren't many banks where he can hide. This may cause him to start moving it around, looking for safer havens. It's much easier to spot when it moves.

The FBI CAN use the info, since it wasn't they who hacked to get it. Just a lucky break for them, hehe.

"IGNORANT QUESTION: Can the FBI use information that it has received, but which was obtained by the source through illegal means?"

The simple answer is "yes".

The FBI does not exceed its Constitutional authority in accepting evidence -- whether it was gained by illegal means or not.

For reference, consider that Linda Tripp's recordings constituted perfectly good evidence even though they may have been collected illegally.
