I have looked for this post and figured it might be of intrest to others.
I have served with officers of several nations and have posted my impressions below.
Brits - sometimes a bit stuffy and overboard on rank they nonetheless impressed me as being as close to American Caliber as it gets. Tenacious and willing to show real heart when it needs to.
Koreans - Never, and I mean NEVER piss off a Korean, Some of the most intense people I have ever met, soldiers to the core. I once trained an E8 whos name was, and I kid you not, Sgt Roc. Need I say more?
Germans - Rough tough Soldiers, patient and not afraid to get down and dirty. We could hope for no better Allies.
Italians - Not nearly as serious as some, they know when to stop playing and kick a**.
There are many more I knew but dont know if I am sinking ships or If I am way off base here.
Comments please?

I am ex-Army Electronics instructor and worked with many of our allies. I also served in Germany as an NCO in a Field unit and served with several nationalities.

The ROC Army are some of the toughest in the world. The viet-cong feared the ROC Army more than Americans.

Former MP Officer here...
...The ROKs are sound allies. I do fear infiltration in their ranks by an extremely aggresive nK intelligence apparatus. I was there long enough to live and dwell amongst some older Koreans...Their love for America is greater than that held by many Americans. Many in their younger generation find it cool to trash the U.S. and like to protest a lot, because they can. I once saw a protester at Danguk University lob a molotov into a crowd of Korean riot police. By some miracle, the bottle did not smash, but skittered along the pavement with it's lit fuse. A Korean riot policeman proceeded to pick the d@mn thing up and toss it back into the crowd of protestors...these people are serious about what they do...and they understand what it means to be threatened from without and within...

I don't share your confidence in the Germans or the Italians...
Surprisingly, the Pakistani record and reputation in Somalia was quite impressive, even against their fellow muslims. It will be interesting to see what kind of resolve they bear in the coming days. At the MP Officer advanced course we had two Hungarians...also some (frighteningly) intense folks...

Israel has several commando units that rate with or above the Koreans, was in Nam 68-70 with both, neither to be screwed with!

Israeli Defence Force, they are the best at covert ops and the element of surprise.

I am more concerned about the commitment of the Allied governments than their soldiers.

Korean Marines are bad to the bone and like the British Royal Marines they feel a kin-ship to their American Brothers. I witnessed the reaction of a Royal Marine Commando here in the states as he saw the WTC attack on the news for the first time. He said "We will get some pay back on this one" For the first time I realized how much they really care for the U.S.

The author of this thread clearly intended this as a discussion for vets, of our peers in other armed services. If you belong here and can keep your remarks relevant, than please do so...this is not a thread soliciting your opinons of other governments. There are plenty of other threads where you may do that.

In the airport at Pusan (on personal business) I once saw a ROK Marine that had to have been 6'8", I kid you not. My first thought on seeing this monster was, "I'm glad I'm not Chinese!"

I once had occassion to ride in a truck convoy that stopped at a ROK Marine unit... They had a couple of viet cong and an NVA regular they wanted to interogate. Let me just say that they got every bit (and I REALLY MEAN EVERY BIT) of information out of them.
I think we ought to let them ask all the terrorists the questions. I have no doubt that they will not be "reluctant" to answer questions.

The only mosque that I'm aware of in Seoul was in Itaewon, near Yongsan Garrison. I can assure you, the Korean peoples are no fans of Islam...

The discipline they (The Koreans) use on their junior troops is hard corps. A butt stroke to the head is the norm. I dont know so much about the French Military, I get the impression they dont like us very much. We owe a great debt to their support in the beginning, but we have bailed them out twice, since. They are pretty damn socialist.

What you say was true 30 yrs ago. I don't know how they are now. Interesting stuff about the Koreans.

Dont get me started on the french, my views are no secret.
On the other hand, I knew an Indian, a Sikh, a true Mountain of a man. You knew, that if this man gave his word, he would die trying to live up to his promise. Truly legendary soldiers, and for good reason.
IMHO
