Arizona State University junior Ahmad Saad Nasim told a gruesome tale: He was attacked from behind, beaten and pelted with eggs while his assailants uttered racial epithets.
But that story was a lie and now has ASU officers considering whether to cite Nasim for false reporting.
The department has not yet determined whether to take action against Nasim, said police Chief John Pickens, but it is in contact with the Maricopa County Attorney's Office, which would prosecute such crimes. Nasim could also face internal disciplinary action from the university.
The political science major confessed Thursday to the hoax after he was found lying inside a locked bathroom stall in the university's library, apparently attempting to fake another hate crime. Police said he gave no reason for either hoax.
Nasim, 23, did not return calls Monday, and his father, who answered the door to the family's home in Mesa, said they had no comment.
Senior Vikesh Desai, who is working with police and administrators to improve safety for students, said the lie hurts victims of genuine hate crimes.
"It's like the boy who cried wolf," Desai said. "Now if another person is attacked in a hate crime, more people are going to question it. People are going to be afraid to speak up because they'll think people won't believe them."
Benjamin Graff, a friend of Nasim's, said he was surprised to learn of the hoax. Graff worked with Nasim when the two were student senators at the University of Arizona.
He said he remembers Nasim as a quiet but passionate student who cared about diversity and multiculturalism. (LOL) "He was always willing to contribute to discussions," Graff said. "He was always very involved in writing letters to the editor. Just a very kindhearted person."
In the days following the incident Nasim even wrote a letter to the student newspaper.
"Many of you e-mailed to show your support, gave online get well cards and many kind messages that made me burst into tears," he wrote. "My physical injuries will take time to wither away. But you Sun Devils have certainly taken care of the emotional pains I had."
The increased police presence on campus will remain in place, the police chief added, especially since a student of Indian descent was attacked Tuesday by three men who punched and kicked him while making anti-Muslim remarks.
"We're not letting this situation taint our investigation in the other incidents," Pickens said. "We're going to follow any leads. There is no reason to suspect that the incident (on Tuesday) didn't occur."
Hopefully this CLYMER will be expelled from ASU and criminal charges filed against him for filing two false police reports.
Sheesh, isn't this what older brothers do to younger brothers daily. Even if this happened I'd tell the guy to get thicker skin and be a man.
ASU needs to kick this kid outta there!
Tales such as these really reveal something about these people. They know they are not really discriminated against in any part of their life, but they want to believe so bad that something other than their poor attitude or intiative is to balme for their shortcommings. They have realized that they can use their skin color to an advantage over all those who dont share their hue. People such as Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have spouted the notion for years that its racist to even question whether a minority is lying about an "attack", and have even gone so far as to knowingly lie and mislead the court. So, they think they are so smart, and can pull a fast one on 'ol whitey. Well, its time for them to think again.
I really do feel sorry for patriotic, peace-loving Muslims. But I'll say it again: they need to get MORE VISIBLE. We've all got images of towel-heads burning flags. We need to see more of, well, towel-heads WAVING flags, praying for and blessing America, and directing their displeasure towards OUR enemies.

Well then, no harm no foul. Diversity and multiculturalism trump learning, development of skills, and the search for the truth.
Sticks and stones might break my bones.
But names will REALLY hurt me.
There is a whole "grievance industry" singing this song.
Not a good place to try something like this. He'll end up wearing pink underwear, sleeping in a tent with other inmates, and even part of a chain gang.
It might feel like home!
A few days after the bombing an American Indian girl in Tulsa, OK.,was run over and killed. The other people with her claimed it was a groups of whites who did it and were shouting racial slurs. Her family gets on TV and decries this hate crime. Turns out that the murders were also American Indian and that the victim's friends KNEW IT! They just wanted the exposure. Never mind the truth or capturing the killer. The truth was it was a bunch of drunks harrasing each other in traffic after leaving a club.
Not only should he be charged, but he should be subject to at least the same sentence as someone would have received if convicted of the alleged crime in the first place. Perhaps getting tough will put a damper on fake "hate crime" reports.
I think the count of students who took off for home because of this "incident" is up to 48.
Charge him the lost tuition for the 48, and ship his worthless, whiney butt back to his pals in the mideast.
