Congressman urges media giant to call terrorists 'terrorists'

Rep. J.C. Watts, Jr., R.-Okla., is urging the London-based Reuters news service to reconsider its recently stated position of not using the word "terrorist" to describe the 19 Islamic terrorists who collectively killed approximately 6,000 Americans Sept. 11.

"I fail to see how this noun is not an accurate portrayal of the aggressors who committed the acts of violence witnessed by the entire world last month," Watts wrote Wednesday in a letter to Tom Glover, chief executive officer and Geert Linnebank, editor-in-chief of the Reuters Group in London.

"I am not asking Reuters to be Radio Free Afghanistan. Rather, I am merely requesting that you not sever the word "terrorist" from your stylebook," he wrote.

Last week, Stephen Jukes, Reuters' global head of news, decreed that the wire service's 2,500 reporters shouldn't use the word "terrorist" unless in a direct quote.

"We all know that one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter and that Reuters upholds the principle that we do not use the word terrorist," Jukes wrote in an internal memo. "To be frank, it adds little to call the attack on the World Trade Center a terrorist attack."

Attempting to explain his values-neutral approach, Jukes added: "We're trying to treat everyone on a level playing field, however tragic it's been and however awful and cataclysmic for the American people and people around the world."

Watts, who serves as the House Republican Conference Chairman, also sent a "Dear Colleague" letter to every member of the House of Representatives, urging them to let Reuters know how they feel.

In a related matter, the Religion Newswriters Association voted recently to avoid using the word "Islamic" to describe the 19 Islamic terrorists. The group said it was "troubled" by the frequent use of the term in the days after the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington." At its annual meeting, the group adopted a resolution also rejecting "similar phrases that associate an entire religion with the action of a few."

I'd prefer the Media call them Spawn of Satan, but if they'll only agree to call them Terrorists that'll have to do. In any case, they'll all be dead soon.

During the Right to Work campaign here in OK some idiot RAT State Legislator sent out a letter saying that no blacks supported Right to Work (which was wrong) and acknowledged that J.C. did but said he wasn't black! Everyone from the Governor on down went after the idiot RAT. J.C. puts up with more slams from the RATS for being a Republican and Conservative than anyone can imagine and he keeps right on fighting for what is right!

We could stand a lot more Congressmen like J.C. Watts, Jr.!

J.C. Rules. But they are not terrorists...they are "militant extremists" or whatever the hell the media calls them today.

I think we should reconsider using the words "news organization" to describe Reuters. After all there is some disagreement here, one man's "news organization" is another man's "cr*p factory".

What idiots. People who can't figure out just who their enemies are deserve to meet the Almighty. Who knows what their fate might be. I will leave it up to Him. I couldn't believe the proliferation of idiots in the '60's.....but I can see they STILL abound. It's amazing so many idiots are around. P.T. Barnum was really sharp.

What is it with these journalists? First the clowns (editors) in Miami and now this?!

I guess it's time to boycott Reuters!

Funny that....... I remember not too long ago when the KLA and now the NLA went from terrorists to freedom fighters to legitimate politicians...... I guess crime does pay, but only if your the murdering/terrorising type......

Good point....... It makes me wonder what the purpose of a "news organization" is..... I always thought it was to present the events as they are and not as they would like them to be........

I wonder if they're equally troubled by "Christian Far Right" or any of the other terms meant to marginalize those of us who are believers...
