Palestinian police kill two at pro-bin Laden rally
GAZA (Reuters) - Palestinian police have shot dead two protesters during a rally in support of Osama bin Laden, the first time Palestinians have been killed by their own security forces since the start of the anti-Israel revolt.
Witnesses said police shot the two demonstrators on Monday while dispersing stone-throwers at a rally organised by the militant Islamic group Hamas in Palestinian-ruled Gaza City.
The Palestinian Authority had banned the demonstration, in which police said at least 10 policemen were wounded, one of them by gunfire by masked men inside Gaza's Hamas-run Islamic University.
Thousands of protesters, some chanting "hail to bin Laden" marched through the streets as police fired teargas.
The rally was held a day after U.S.-led air strikes on Afghanistan, where bin Laden, the prime suspect in the September 11 attacks in the United States, is believed to be hiding.

Is Arafat about to launch his own "Knight of the Long Knives?"

While it's unfortunate that two people are dead, it is about time that the Palestinian Authority (oxymoron?) strapped on their testicles and did their job.

Do you think Arafat is running a little scared? He knows Bush is serious and a man of his word. The greatest thing we could see in the Mideast is the Palestinians fighting against each other.

Arafat knows that any pro-OBL demos will destroy his goals. This could pull the Palies apart...Yasir's days may be numbered, c/o Hamas.

What am I missing. My first thought was .. Two down. These aren't the innocent Arab people who just want to live in peace.
To: veronica
Too bad the welfare needing Israel decided to rely on Arafat for their own protection through a "peace" process.

It's over. It's finished.
The debate about "excessive" Israeli action against the "Palestinians" is moot. It was always a lie.
A Priori:
If the "Palestinian" reaction to their own protesters is to kill the demonstrators-what should be the Israeli reaction to "Palestinian" violence aimed to murder Israelis?

What am I missing. My first thought was .. Two down. These aren't the innocent Arab people who just want to live in peace. You're not missing anything. Your assessment is probably correct, but I will always lament the loss of life, regardless of the justification. It's just me.

I do not trust Arafat one bit. However, his security forces taking action this strong against anti-American demonstrators is a powerful statement that he sees somethings as beyond tolerating. Perhaps it was just defiance of his ban on such demonstrations that he cannot tolerate. Perhaps this is just a cynical action, like his blood donation, to show that he is not completely anti-Israeli and anti-American. But maybe, just maybe, he is a (relative) moderate, somebody who, despite his despicable past, we could deal with (as opposed to Hamas who would rather die than reach any accomodation). Nah, on second thought, it's just a cynical trick.

Rabin always said that someday, if Arafat were serious about getting a state, he would have to have his own Palestinian Atalena. (For those who don't know, early in Israeli's existence, there were rival militias; PM Ben-Gurion ordered the downing of the Jewish ship Atalena that housed one of the militias, a controversial [but in my opinion needed] moment to this day.) I doubt that this particular episode is it, but at some point, Arafat will have to take on--militarily--Hamas, if he wants his own state.

If Israeli police had done this, this thread would already have 50 hits....You know what I mean.

now the Palestinian Authority knows what Israeli soldiers have to face all the time. Of course I doubt Hanan Ashrawi will condemn them for killing the demonstrators...

The debate about "excessive" Israeli action against the "Palestinians" is moot. It was always a lie. I'm shocked at your reaction. Don't you know this is another example of the Jewish-controlled media covering up for the Israeli war mongers? The Jews shot those two innocent Palestinians. Had to be. Couldn't possibly be anything else. /sarcasm
