Uneasy silence of the Arab allies as anger grows
The Telegraph (U.K.) ^ | 10/09/2001 | Anton La Guardia and Alan Philps

AMERICA'S most important Arab allies kept an embarrassed silence yesterday, reflecting the unease that the military strikes have caused.

Even the fiercely pro-Western Kuwait said Arabs and Muslims could not watch the operations in Afghanistan without "a heavy heart".

But as thousands of students protested in Cairo universities, the governments of Egypt and Saudi Arabia pretended that nothing unusual was going on. Some smaller Gulf sheikhdoms expressed qualified support for the American war on terrorism.

Qatar, which chairs the 56-member Organisation of the Islamic Conference and will hold an emergency meeting of Muslim ministers tomorrow, said terrorists should be put on trial.

Further south in Bahrain, headquarters of the American 5th Fleet, Sheikh Khalifa bin Sulman al-Khalifa, the prime minister, said: "Bahrain reiterates its support to the international community's move to fight terrorist elements based on its firm stand against all forms of terrorism.

"At the same time, Bahrain is keen along with all those with goodwill in the world that the peaceful and brotherly Afghan people should not be punished for acts outside their free will."

Iran, Afghanistan's neighbour, led the outright condemnation of the attacks. In an address to clerics punctuated with ritual cries of "Death to America, Death to Israel", Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, said: "We condemn the attack on the country and the people of Afghanistan."

Iraq chimed in with anti-American rhetoric. Naji Sabri, the foreign minister, said: "We are at the brink of a big war being launched first against Islamic states and Muslim people and there are threats against other Muslim countries and people."

The Babel newspaper, run by Saddam Hussein's son Uday, wrote: "The US aggression on Afghanistan, after those on Iraq and Palestine, is a form of organised terrorism against the peaceful peoples of the world and it will have to assume the consequences."

Syria's media questioned America's "double standards", saying Israel should be the next target. Many newspapers expressed worry about what will happen if the operation against Osama bin Laden is successful. "The worst thing would be bin Laden becoming a symbol like other enemies of the United States," said the Beirut newspaper An-Nahar.

In Jordan, Al-Dustour wrote: "We are afraid that the United States will develop its military plans to involve areas outside Afghanistan and attack some Arab countries on the Defence Department's terrorist list."

No doubt they are on the sidelines quietly watching. They are looking down the twin barrels of a shotgun. The first barrel is the political hit they will eventually take when the War on Terrorism gets around to looking at each of their own countries. The second barrel represents the economic hit that they will take if Afghanistan is stabilized to the point that the oil and gas pipeline can be laid and the vast reserves of Central Asia get developed and the fuel gets to market. Lower prices and loss of the oil weapon has huge longterm ramifications for their own standing in the world. I wouldn't expect them to jump at the opportunity to help bring about their own demise.

If the Arab world had just kept their own house tidy, we would never have had to go in and hauled out the trash.

Let's make a movie - The Silence Of The Arabs.

They love Osama - they worship him with a nice Chianti, some fava beans...and a little Hummus.

Someday these clerics will learn the valuable lesson that China once learned.

You can fan the flames of hatred and vengeance into a roaring fire to distract
from you own inadequacies.

But if the evil capitalist or great Satan turns out to be nothing more than a
paper tiger then only you will be consumed.

Because of earlier painful lessons China has learned to keep the rhetoric to
a manageable level.

If these guys don't then Islam might very well consume its self.

Say it all together now: PAN ARAB ISLAMIC FASCISM or PAN ISLAMIC FASCISM.

"a heavy heart".

Yeah, the black heart of Islam. Boohooo. All crying over the fascistic Taliban theocratic hegemony and poor, poor Binny. It just goes to show these people don't give a rats over the people. I keep hearing the people in Afghanistan are poor and repressed and want to get rid of the Taliban. Am I being mislead by the Arab countries and our media?

These guys being Arabs, they talk out of both sides of their mouths. The only thing that makes them more uneasy than possible attacks by the US on Arab madmen like Saddam Hussein and Moammar Qaddafi is the possibility that we won't finish the job, like in '91, and they're left all alone again to deal with the bloodied but unbowed lunatics and their adoring "Arab street" there in the Middle East.

Hold off there Ayatollah,
I do not believe that my America is the great Satan. They do.

Does their hatred for the big bad USA blind you as well?

You can instigate for total war with all the Arabs and ALL the Muslims and get lots of Americans and Arabs killed, but Israel will not benefit. Israel's artificial economy is already on the verge of collapse. Your options will be what? Nuke somebody? That's also known as Zionist fanaticism.

Excuse me, did I miss the part in the story about all those Israeli students marching and shouting "Death to America!"? But I didn't miss this: no matter what these Arabs do or say, for people like you, it's always all about Israel, isn't it?
