Times columnist receives suspicious envelope
Firefighters sealed off the desk of St. Petersburg Times columnist Howard Troxler after he received a white granular substance in the mail. Some of the unidentified substance fell out of the envelope after Troxler opened it over his desk in the newsroom of the paper's offices, 490 First Ave. S, St. Petersburg. Troxler placed the envelope on his desk. Police and firefighters were notified. "I'm sure it's nothing, but the fire department says that in an abundance of caution, they're going through all of their procedures," Troxler, 42, said. "If nothing else, it's a good test." Police put the envelope in a plastic bag and inside a tin can and drove it to a state health lab in Tampa for analysis. St. Petersburg firefighters did not have any other reports of suspicious substances Tuesday. They do not want to take lightly any such complaints. Newsweek magazine reported on its Web site Monday that the American Media office in Lantana received a "weird love letter to Jennifer Lopez'' a week before the Sept. 11 attacks. Inside was what was described as a "soapy, powdery substance'' and a Star of David charm. The letter was handled by both Sun photography editor Bob Stevens of Lantana, who died of anthrax and Ernesto Blanco, a Sun mailroom employee who has tested positive for anthrax, according to unidentified workers cited by Newsweek.

Our radio station here just report that the IRS in Cincinnati received an envelope with white powder in it and it was taken to Columbus to the Health Department to investigate.

I am not a pro but I think the dumbest thing you can do is take the stuff on a road trip. This is the second case I have heard of today where the person who got the letter took it somewhere.
I would make a phone call and wait.I Would also put it in a plastic bag so I would not inhale more.Isnt this the best advice?

From the headline I thought it might have been Clymer at the New York Times.
His output is toxic enough already, though...

The two incidents mentioned in this thread (the Columnist, and the IRS) are the 8th and 9th reports of envelopes with White Powder today. Yes, it may be nothing, it is entirely possible that each day across america thousands of envelopes with white powder are delivered anonymously to random persons. On the other hand, given that the dead guy (Stevens) and the Mailroom guy received such an envelope with powder before the WTC attack, it does seem a bit unusual.

Any envelope bearing Ed McMahon's photo has always been suspicious.

Unbelieveable! Wonder if they ever found that Intern that was working for the rag in West Palm Beach?

"Wonder if they ever found that Intern that was working for the rag in West Palm Beach?" I am wondering that myself, I have seen nothing further published about him. Perhaps one of our fellow Freepers can inform us both.

Oh, wrong one, this is on PB county, sorry.

I heard that he was Hispanic, not Middle Eastern, and that the FBI had contacted and cleared him.

I personally would not repackage it myself... that would seem stupid; i would hope that HazMat could take care with less risk.

Yes, someone on NBC or ABC last night said that they had talked to him also. The reporter said that the surprise the intern wrote about in his e-mail was some food left behind for co-workers (or at least that's what the intern said).

He's actually from Spain. The "surprise" he mentioned in his email turned out to be bagels and cream cheese.
To: sirshackleton
Yeah, I saw on MSNBC Dr. Jack Arnot(or whatever his name is) breathlessly stating how overblown that this was, how the intern was actually from the BASQUE region of Spain, so obviously no connection. He then gave the bagel and cream cheese answer.
So we should rest easy, the suspicious intern is only from a part of Spain that has participated for decades in terrorist bombings. Whaddagenius.

Was there not a contingent of FReepers outside his window yelling, "Open it! Open it!"

Our radio station here just report that the IRS in Cincinnati received an envelope with white powder in it and it was taken to Columbus to the Health Department to investigate. This is just a drug dealer paying his taxes in cocaine.

Hmmmm...Wachovia/First Union in Charlotte received an "unusual" overseas package in the mail today. Law Enforcement officials were called in and took it away in a large bucket.
Keep in mind -- Charlotte is the second largest financial center in the country -- behind NYC.

How about that it messes up the forensics, too? The last thing I want to do is transport a mystery substance.
