Nation set to push Sharon on agreement
By John Donnelly, Globe Staff, 10/10/2001
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration is prepared in the
next few weeks to publicly increase pressure on Israeli Prime
Minister Ariel Sharon to accept not only a Palestinian state but a
viable Palestinian homeland that includes a ''shared Jerusalem,''
according to US officials and a State Department draft statement.
President Bush - who was described by officials as ''incensed''
over comments made last week by Sharon that Bush should not
''appease the Arabs'' as the Nazis were in 1938 - will have final say
over the US position. State Department officials said White House
aides could tone down the statement, which is expected later this
month, but they are pushing for a strong stance.
''They are ready to tell the Israelis it's time to give up the occupied
terrorities,'' said Jay C. Farrar, a former senior defense and
National Security Council official. ''They will say obviously that
Israel has a right to exist, and we will work to ensure that right, but
the Palestinians have a right to their own homeland. The linchpin to
all of this is the Jerusalem question.''
Edward S. Walker, who until April was the assistant secretary of
state for Near East Affairs, said he hoped the ''vision essentially
created through Camp David negotiations and Taba in relatively
general terms would be followed now. The administration is
highlighting the fact you can't walk all the way away from it.''

The Boston Globe is one of the most Liberal papers in the country, I take everything they say with a huge grain of salt. By the way...didn't Barak offer the Pals everything in this article? Bush is pushing for the Mitchell Report now, that's about it.

If the shoe fits.......
Churchill described appeasement as feeding a crocadile, hoping he eats you last.

"Liberal" should not mean failure to support the President, or US allies, in war.

What fools think that an Muslim/Arab Palestinian state can co-exist with a Jewish Israel? Not the Palestinians -- their maps show ALL of Israel as Palestine.
If this welcoming and establishment of a state committed to one's destruction within one's border is such a good idea, why then we must set up a Taliban State in Midtown-NYC.!

Very good points.
They want the destruction of Israel and a free America, like the Arabs.

I thought the whole point was to get Arafat to defend Israelies from his rabid Palestinian attack dogs? He he he. People can dream on it anyhow.

The US State Dept. is very high on my list if terrorist organizations.

I think it's time to finally state that there will NEVER be a Palestanian state in the lands now held by Israel. Jordan and Egypt took over the vast majority of the original Palestanian state in 1948 - and, therefore, the Arab world needs to decide among themselves where IN THE ARABIAN WORLD they will carve out a Palestanian state.
To: TheOtherOne
The US State Dept. is very high on my list if terrorist organizations.Come on, guys, it is a simple common sense. The key question is can Jews cleanse Palestinians from Jerusalem and Left Bank ?
The answer is a BIG NO. First of all, while technically Israel has enough resources to do it, Isreali society would not be able to stomach it otherwise they would do it already. Second (thanks to comrade Clinton), ethnic cleansing is a crime against humanity now, and until this notion is reversed there will be no Jewish political leader bold enough to put his name under nominally genocidal act. Third, it does not make much sense now (as opposed to the days of 1967): in any case the cost will be enormous in all respects and benefits will be marginal.
It is time to face it: there is no way to push Palestinians out into Jordan, Lebanon and Egypt. So, the next logically best thing is to separate from them and as long nobody in the world wants these morons, so they should be left on their own. Whether or not the goal of Palestinian state would be extermination of Israel does not matter much - it will be state to state war of aggression then (instead of intifada), so Israel would not have its hands bound and would easily handle this kind of problems. The only things Israel has to worry about in my view are to have no right of return into Israel proper and to have a right to deport unfriendly Israeli Arabs to Palestinian state.
BTW, in order to improve his negotiation positions Israel has to annex Golan Heights and Temple Mount - there is no population there to expel, Syria does not matter much at the time, reaction of the rest of Muslim world matters even less now.

England managed to extract a very tight agreement from China when they gave them back Hong Kong. Similarly, if we negotiated a tight and explicit arrangement with the PLO, we can end up with a peacful settlement. Some of the ideas can be: The first President of the nation of Palestine must be a US born, US educated Palestinian Christian, and the Prime Minister is also a US borm, US educated Palestenian Moslem. All the Cabinets must be moderate intellectuals from the educated Palestenians in Europe, and the USA. No intellectual from Arab universities should be allowed to serve at least in the first administration during the building of the democratic aparatus of the Palestiniuan nation. Massive finantial aid from Israel to this new country must be arranged in order to increase the cooperation between the two people. The Palestinian state will outlaw Islamic political prties. The secret police will moniter cleric preaching, and arrest any one that preaches hate. The state should be an economic entity like Monaco? No military force! If the west, and Israel realise how much defense money is wasted because of the Paletinian problem, it would become is to budget say $50 Billion dollars to rebuild this dump called Palestine into a tourist attraction, and Israeli factories to employ Arab youths.

Did "W" become Hillary Clinton over night???? The US is attacked by allies of the Palestinians so we retaliate by handing over exactly what they have been murdering to achieve for more then 5 decades???? Unbelievable.
As far as making sure the Palestinian hierarchy is moderate- forget it- compared to the Jezbollah hard liners within the ranks, Arafat is a moderate and he has never been able to control his extremists- do you believe American educated authorities will do any better???

What makes Anyone think that the Arabs are interested in an independent Israel. From everything they say, it seems that they will not accept any Jewish country in hte area. Correct me if I'm wrong.

The Truth about The Treaty of Hudaibiya By MOSHE KOHN Excerpt from "VIEW FROM NOV" The Jerusalem Post 22 January, 1999 http://www.jpost.co.il/Columns/Article-2.html US Representative Jim Saxton (Republican-New Jersey) recently wrote an article criticizing Yasser Arafat and the Palestinian Authority for various wrongdoings, and President Bill Clinton and Secretary Madeleine Albright for pandering to them. He wrote inter alia: "...how can anyone trust an agreement to the Treaty of Hudaibiya enacted by the Prophet Mohammed, in which a treaty lasts as long as political expediency dictates?" The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) demanded a retraction and an apology. CAIR said that Mohammed "never broke any agreement," citing several classical Moslem commentators in support. Responding to the pressure, Saxton sent CAIR a letter saying he agreed with a 1996 U.S. News & World Report editorial stating that "The 10-year truce [of Hudaibiya] was broken... by the Meccans." But he didn't owe them an apology. In March 628, Mohammed and his Meccan rivals signed a 10-year truce at Hudaibiya. In January 630 "the murder of a Muslim by a Meccan for what appears to have been a purely private difference of opinion served as a casus belli for final attack and conquest of Mecca" (Bernard Lewis, The Arabs in History, Harper Torchbooks, 1966). And "By sabotage, by deceit, by the terror of Mohammed's name, the city had been weakened; and it fell into his hands... like a ripe plum" (Robert Payne, The History of Islam, Dorset Press, 1959).
SERIOUS FLAWS WITH A PALESTINIAN STATE (and Oslo Agreements)
(1) The most fundamental flaw is the renunciation of Jewish claims to Judea, Samaria, and Gaza. The right of the Jewish people to the Land of Israel is God-given and cannot be renounced by a transitory Israeli government. The present government has no right to deprive future generations of Jews and Israelis of their legal patrimony. (2) Yasir Arafat's PLO is incapable of providing Israelis with the cessation of violence they so dearly crave. There are ten rejectionist PLO factions plus Hamas and other Islamic fundamentalist factions that will continue to kill Jews. (3) Without the presence of Israel's internal security force (Shin Bet) inside Judea, Samaria and Gaza, it will be impossible to halt terrorism or even keep it within present levels. The Israel Defense Forces maintain tremendous power but are of little importance in day-to-day terrorism. (4) Arafat's signature on the agreement and the PLO acceptance is of no consequence as Arafat is a documented liar. Muslims are permitted to lie to to non-Muslims and break agreements with them under the Koranic law of HUDAIBIYA. Treaties and contracts with them are worthless. (5) By virtue of this agreement, the Israeli government has validated Arab claims to the Land of Israel. Decades of fighting Arab propaganda and distortions of history are trivialized and discounted. (6.) This agreement puts the status of Jerusalem on the negotiating table. Every previous government of Israel steadfastly stood by the principle of Jerusalem being non-negotiable. (7) All of Israel's military and civilian communications will now be easily monitored from the hills of Judea and Samaria. (8) While Israeli radar and military installations are not affected by this current agreement, the future is less certain. Eventually the Arab population will force the Israelis out. (9) Whether they admit it publicly or not, Israeli leaders know that this is the first step to a Palestinian state. (10) The "Palestinian right of return" has been acknowledged for the first time by the Israelis and could result in a flood of Arabs to Judea and Samaria. (11) The inevitable increase in Arab population will result in tremendous pressure on Israel's water supply. As Arab wells are dug in the Judean and Samarian hills, the natural mountain aquifer that supplies much of Tel Aviv and the coastal plain with water will be serious depleted. Such depletion will cause the salt water of the Mediterranean Sea to penetrate Israel's coastal strip, thus destroying all water supplies. This process can be witnessed in California, where sea water has already penetrated five miles into the coast. (12) Some 70% of Israel's population and industry is concentrated in a small strip of coast and greater Tel Aviv. That population will be immediately threatened by Kaytusha rockets. Fired singly from the hills of Judea and Samaria, and set with timers they will be virtually impossible to stop. The Israeli government plan to coordinate with the Palestinian police is akin to working with the fox to guard the henhouse. The Palestinian police are being recruited from among the terrorists who delight especially in murder and mutilation of bodies. Will they arrest and turn over a terrorist who kills Israelis and then escapes to Gaza? (13) The Jewish residents of Judea, Samaria, and Gaza will no doubt be victims of ethnic cleansing. The Arabs will insist on a Jew-free country like Jordan, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait. The government has already begun confiscating the weapons of Jews, which could cause them to become vulnerable to massacre like the Bosnians. (14) The air and seaports planned for Gaza will facilitate the entry of weapons and terrorists, threatening the security of Israel. (15) The proposed "safe passages" for the PA will facilitate the movement of terrorists and weapons from Gaza to Judea and Samaria. |

I agree with most of that. But the State Dept. is still a terrorist organization.

"Similarly, if we negotiated a tight and explicit arrangement with the PLO, we can end up with a peacful settlement." You do not swear in a known liar to testify as a witness in a court. You do not negotiate with a group that has again and again clearly demonstrated its untrustworthiness.
How many times does the dog have to bite, before you will stop saying "it bit, but won't bite again"?
