Expatriate Americans, Britons Face Indonesia Threat
Dateline, Jakarta, Indonesia Oct. 11, 2001
Britons and Americans will be hunted down and expelled from Indonesia, a radical Muslim group has announced.
The hardline Islamic Defenders Front had given the Indonesian government until Thursday to sever all diplomatic ties with Washington, or face a purge of Westerners living on the archipelago.
Violence
The group says it will sweep Indonesian towns and hotels and 'escort' Westerners to airports if they refuse to leave.
Its leaders said the campaign would be carried out "elegantly" but there are fears it could lead to widespread violence against foreigners. Tourists and ex-pats have already been warned to stay inside their hotels and homes.
Previous political violence in Indonesia has been used as an excuse to carry out grudges against minority groups, especially the more affluent Chinese and Christians.
Violence
FPI chief Muhammad Rizieq said: "The decision today is that the FPI has a strong will to keep on conducting anti-US actions in all forms until the government cuts ties with the US.
"The sweeping (hunt) will be conducted as elegantly as it can. We will approach foreigners...For Americans and Britons they will be warned in a nice way to leave Indonesia. If necessary, we will take them to the airport.
"If they refuse to leave then we will just give them a warning that anything could happen to them, that we cannot take any responsibility for actions that may be carried out by certain groups of people."
'Foreigners safe'
Indonesia is the most populous Islamic country in the world and has seen several violent anti-Western demonstrations in the capital Jakarta.
More than 1,000 students tried to storm the parliament on Wednesday in protest against the US strikes.
However, the Islamic Defenders Front is only a small group and is not representative of Muslims in Indonesia.
Some residents in Jakarta's suburbs have been launching their own counter patrols to reassure foreigners they are safe, the Jakarta Post reported.

Either way this is good news..............
It gives Dubya a good excuse to stop buying their (Riady's) coal and rescind the criminal's Executive Order on the land in Utah.
I'm done with turning the other cheek to these pricks.
THIS is what it's all about.
Stop buying their coal.
The Islamic Defenders Front. Sounds like someone is desperate to get on The List.
The alternative is too expensive!
I bet that would not be hard to find. But I am sure the US Diversity Police (campus administrators and the ACLU) would protect some of them and their constitutionally guaranteed right to demonstrate and produce sarin and anthrax in the US even if American countrymen were being pinned down in hotels and at the Embassy in Jakarta. Life is ludicrous at times, isn't it?
You and your families are now at risk due to our immigration "free for all".
It's not clear what you mean by 'reciprocate,' but it's a very, very, very bad idea to target foreigners in this country in this mistreatment, no matter what happens.
