From "Jeffords Bailed After Bush Brush-Off," NY Daily News, June 28, 2001.
"...Jeffords recalls in the new issue of Rolling Stone how Vice President Dick Cheney sent him to the Oval Office in the hope that the President could persuade him not to desert the party. Jeffords says he told Bush "he really has to pay more attention to the [GOP] moderates. Then I said, 'If you don't get the resources out there [for education], YOU'LL BE A ONE-TERM PRESIDENT.' " Jeffords tells Rolling Stone's Paul Alexander that Bush "just nodded and said, 'I don't agree with you. I think we've got a good plan.' " Hearing no hint of compromise, Jeffords says, he told Bush he'd made up his mind - to which Bush replied: "NICE TALKING TO YOU."

Jerk Jeffords and his traitorous tantrum seems sooooooo irrelevant today. We do need to undo his treachery, however, by ousting Johnson of SD, Baucus of MT, the Torch of NJ, and wifey from MO., so W can get back the Senate with a seat or two to spare.

"Nice talking to you." --- W had a spine well before 9-11.

W had a spine well before 9-11. I always liked his line, "I don't need to take a poll to know my own mind."

Hearing no hint of compromise, Jeffords says, he told Bush he'd made up his mind - to which Bush replied: "NICE TALKING TO YOU." If I know Bush's reputation at all, there was a double-meaning in this. "Nice talking to you" was a reference to both that specific conversation as well as any other conversations they might have had before that. You have to remember that Bush regards political traitors as the lowest form of life, which is why he treats "enemies" like Hillary Clinton and Ted Kennedy more cordially than he treats Jeffords.
If Jeffords and Bush were to have an unexpected meeting in a hallway right now, I'm sure Bush would say something along these lines:
"Jeffie! How are ya? It's been so long since I've seen you in the news that I was starting to wonder if you were still alive! How's those milk prices up there in Vomit, or Vermont, or wherever you come from?"

Remember Daschel's comments went President Bush went to Europe? I think Mr.Daschel, among many others, owes the President a public apology...

Jeffords and other liberals violated their oath to protect the constitution from all enemies, foreign & domestic - their primary obligation, as such, was to provide for a common defense - and they failed because they were too busy focusing on the government providing all kinds of stupid things (ala art projects, etc.), in lieu of our basic defense needs, which placed us at risk while giving Clinton / Gore full reign to chop our defenses left & right and waste the time away masturbating in the oval office. They have blood on their hands and should pay the price.

What the? What's Rolling Stone doing interviewing senators for? Is there a rock star shortage now?
(And what're the odds that they'd ever give a Republicancandidate as much play???)
:) ttt (That's ok. Rolling Stone readers == Morons == Democratic Party)

Hearing no hint of compromise, Jeffords says, he told Bush he'd made up his mind - to which Bush replied: "NICE TALKING TO YOU." Michael Corleone said it best:
"There are many things my father taught me here in this room. He taught me: keep your friends close, but your enemies closer.

"Jeffords says, he told Bush he'd made up his mind - to which Bush replied: "NICE TALKING TO YOU." Dubya had an even better riposte to the guy in a handshake line who'd muttered the same sentiments.
"Who cares what you think?"
THIS President wastes no time on fools.

I don't think Jeffords departure is irrelevant today. Had he not defected, we'd have had a formal declaration of war. Second, you'd have GOP committe chairman. It is all really too bad.

Guess this is Rolling Stone's attempt at being more serious since the WTC attack. Instead of feeding the pop culture obsession with the deep thoughts of flaky rock stars, they've decided to throw the spotlight on their favorite Commie heroes. Wonder if Jeffords'll stuff a sock in his pants for the cover?

you are right - remember how Daschle held up the defense bill for weeks before the war broke out, basically begging our enemies for a beating in classic pacifist style. Remember how he delayed Rumsfeld & UN Ambassador appointments, the liberals even referring to Rumsfeld as "controversial" because of his emphasis on 21st Century Warfare & his view of asymetrical threats? These people must pay for putting our country at risk.

* DICK Durbin of Illinois, who SHOULD be crusing to election thanks to Daley-backing and his double-digit win last time, but is ACTUALLY polling a mere 39% support-- and even the Illinois DEMOCRATS don't rate him favorably
Dick Durbin's re-election FAR from certain
*Tom Harkin of Iowa, who's LAST THREE ELECTIONS were thisclose , because Tom can't figure out he's in GOP-leaning rural western farm country instead of New England DemocRAT land.
Harkin Laying Groundwork for 2002 Clash Over Important Senate Seat
* Paul Wellstone of Minnesota, the 'term-limit pledge' liar who's struggling to poll even with a Republican mayor, even though Wellstone is a two-term incumbant.
Senator Wellstone Trys to Campaign in Race He Pledged Not to Run
* Max "Sympathy vote" Cleland of Georgia, who won by less than 1% last time and failed to get 50%, even though he already held statewide office for 8 years. His responce? Act MORE liberal and alienate his Bush country constituents more.
Cleland bracing for tough re-election fight
* Mary Landrieu of Louisiana, who's last election was so disputed it made the Florida 2000 Presidential race look like a runaway victory. Catholic-controlled Louisiana hates her even more now.
Time for Landrieu to STEAL another election?
If only HALF these races go our way, Jeffords will be back on the minority and discovered people hang up on him when he calls up the GOP leaders and says "I was just kidding guys...can I PLEASE have a committee seat...any seat...pretty please?" ;-)

Nice list, BillyBoy. It gives me hope that the Republicans will take back the Senate. Thanks for posting it. Another thing I think will take place is that the Republicans will get tons more money from people donating and that should make a difference.

it would be so nice to have Jeffords stripped of his committee chairmanship and powerless.

If only HALF these races go our way It would be so nice if all of them did...

Don't forget Harkin in Iowa!!

Opps...thanks Billy

Wonder how Jeffords feels now that he helped that took hundreds of thousands of dollars of deonations from the airlines so that we could have the lax security which directly caused 9/11!
I think he needs the education!

I thought Jefford's sell-out was, and is, a PLUS for the G.O.P.
Let them go to where they'll feel more comfortable, meanwhile, we've got a nation to bring back to glory!
