Islamabad, Pakistan -- Fighters and commanders of Afghanistan's ruling Taliban militia have committed systematic massacres in recent years while trying to consolidate control over northern and western Afghanistan, according to confidential United Nations documents made available to Newsday.

The reports, written by UN personnel in Afghanistan, say such mass killings were ordered or approved by the Taliban leader, Mullah Mohammed Omar. UN officials who investigated a series of massacres of at least 178 people in January in the Yakaolang district of north-central Afghanistan said they had found witnesses to radio conversations between Omar and the teams of Taliban troops conducting the killings.

This reports, along with many others, should be passed along to the "peaceniks" who want us to "dialoge" with the Taliban.

This happened a year ago. Good thing they kept this report confidential at the UN. We might have really gotten mad and done something when it was relevant! I have had it with the UN. Please, somebody relocate them to Khabul, Somalia, Ethiopia, Chernobyl, or China.

Most of these "peaceniks" know full well what they are doing. They cannot care less for Afghan people - their goal is to weaken America from within. This is a vast, vast conspiracy.

Muslims massacre other Muslims. No big deal. Move on. Nothing to see here. This is what the UN is saying

UN is saying this is all you can expect from Muslims  ....We don't hold them to the same standard as Israel. When Israel kills a Palestinian killer via rocket fired from helicopter.....NOW this is a big deal!!!

I agree with you, they all see the USA as the fountain of all evil, and will do anyting to bring it down.

I was glad to see this article about the evil Taliban. My 18 year old daughter, who is lovely, sweet, beautiful, gentle, kind, smart, etc. (proud mommy) just asked me in all her youthful innocence, "Why do they hate us, Mom?" Looks like the Taliban hate anyone who gets in their way or doesn't agree with them -- not just Americans! She goes to school at the same univ. that Jenna Bush goes to. After the 9-11 attack, my daughter said she heard loud helicopters, but knew they were coming to take Jenna away to a safer place. I wish my daughter didn't go to school so far away from me, but at least she doesn't have to fly to come home. Scary times for kids and moms!

Actually, the reports were not so much "confidential" as "internal." Note that in April, Annan noted to the Security Council that the killings warranted more investigation. So it was known AT LEAST to the SC.

Also, any news organisation with reporters in the area could easily have checked in with the UN folks working in and around Afghanistan. So, either the reporters didn't care, or their editors didn't care. These atrocities must have also been known to non-UN personnel (Afghan refugees in the camps, other aid workers in the region, etc.) The news media just didn't care until now!

The fact is, the Western media didn't give a darn about what the Taliban did until recently. That's why they are now choosing to report about it.

Finally, think about this: were it not for the UN investigators on the ground in Afghanistan, we still wouldn't know about this, nor would their evidence be available. Sorry, I don't see the point in bashing these courageous UN investigators who made the report and worked to gain more public notice of these atrocities.

The US, by virtue of being a perm member of the SC knew all about this from way back when. And the US didn't choose to make an issue of it. Of course it's much easier (and so popular on FR) to just blame the UN.

Moderator: Thank you for being diligent in removing that offensive post, but leaving this article posted so others can read it and comment on it. And thank you for all your hard work here on FR.

All: No, I didn't report the offensive post to FR. I did see it, though, before it was so quickly removed.

Thanks for the bump. The peaceniks either change when they read these things, or they are hopeless.

Why didn't that useless organization, the UN, do something if they knew this was going on?

The UN is anti-America. We should make it an empty shell in the near future. We need to reduce funding and rely on ourselves and more friendly nations to accomplish our objectives.
