Plant workers strike at tank manufacturing facilities

By Associated Press, 10/15/2001 08:38

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (AP) More than 800 employees at General Dynamics Land Systems which produces battle tanks and tank parts have gone on strike, a company spokesman said Monday.

Contract negotiations between General Dynamics Land Systems and the United Auto Workers continued past a midnight deadline without reaching an agreement, said company spokesman Peter Keating.

UAW officials were not immediately available for comment.

The Sterling Heights-based company designs, manufactures and supports land and amphibious combat systems for the U.S. Army, the U.S. Marine Corps and allied nations.

The strike affects more than 470 employees at its battle tank production facility in Lima, Ohio, more than 130 workers at its tank parts facility in Eynon, Pa., and about 220 employees at its headquarters, Keating said.

The company, which has existing contracts for battle tanks and a new wheeled combat vehicle, will continue production, Keating said.

Earlier this year, General Dynamics Land Systems, a subsidiary of General Dynamics, landed a $4 billion deal to design futuristic armored combat vehicles.

Another General Dynamics subsidiary, Bath Iron Works, suffered from a 55-day strike last year by its largest union. The company hired a consultant to try to improve relations with workers in Bath, Maine. On the Net:

The last thing that we need are unions making tanks. Who knows when some pissed-off guy who likes to wear his union jacket while he sits around on his ass all day will purposefully break things on the tank to make a point against the company, as unions are well known to do.

"Hmm, let's see, thousands of layoffs in the last several months, and a national emergency is under way ... naww, they'd never replace me .. I think I'll vote yes on the strike proposal..." [/sarcasm]

There's a GD plant here about one mile from me. I know they have quite a few laid off. I just assumed they called them back.

why don't they just replace the workers with volunteers and/or National Guard? I would give up a week or two of my vacation time to go a build tanks and I am sure many others would as well.

Fire'em all communists conspiring against the US, send them to Afganistan. Hire a bunch of patriots from other autoplants. We need a REaganian Executive order to fire them.

Conscript the lot of the strikers, then give them a direct order to go back to work as privates at private's pay. Give 'em a short course on the Uniform Code of Military Justice's provisions of disobedience of direct orders during wartime.

Someone should let the UAW know that the Terrorists are focusing there attacks on liberals far more then any other American. The airliners were targettted on the portion of the election map that was won by Gore, anthrax is being shipped to left wing media and now the leader of the Democrats in Washington. This is a battle for the survival of liberalism (violently opposed by Bin laden and the Taliban who are anti-women, anti-abortion, anti-immigrant, pro armed rebellion and pro-state sponsored religion) so why aren't the UAW aware that they may be helping the allies of their enemy. Regardless if the UAW refuses to rally around the flag and drop this strike, management may have to sacrifice profits to give in to some demands, enough to get the tanks rolling out on time.

Send in the scabs!

Lima has no shortage of skilled workers, due to all the other plant shutdowns in recent years.

A question: If replacement workers are called in, then attacked by union workers, are the union workers then guilty of treason for attempting to damage the U.S.'s ground armored forces?

Treason is a nasty crime, and hey, do the crime, do the time...JFK

Hey, look at it from the union point of view. Their lines of communications became confused after the break up of the Soviet Union and it is no longer clear which socialists give them instructions on which issues. The Canadian UAW (CAW) is a bunch of flaming lefties (well, you knew that when I said "Canadian") and they may have ordered the strike to weaken our ability to conduct a ground war.
