U.S. May Waive China Sanctions

The Bush administration, seeking to promote exchanges of anti-terrorist intelligence with China, is considering a waiver on sanctions that bar the sale of military-related equipment to Chinese security forces, government sources said yesterday.

The U.S. move on the sanctions, which were imposed after the 1989 crackdown on Tiananmen Square demonstrators, would clear the way for the sale of spare parts for Black Hawk helicopters the United States sold to China during the 1980s. The helicopters are designed for use at high altitudes typical of much of China, including its border with Afghanistan.

WTF?!?! What do you think these people know, Bush? They do not know that much about fundamentalists -- look at their total inability to deal with their own problems for God's sake! This is a SCREWUP!

A pathetic "coalition" made up of a bunch of Islamic terrorist states. A possible Taliban presence in a new Afghanistan government. The ill-timed declaration of a Palestinian state. Now kissing up to China. Is this the foreign policy of the most powerful country in the world or of a bunch of wimps?

Oh My G-d! What are they thinking? This is awful. Who in the world thought of this? What about 5 years from now or 10 years from now? The War on Terrorism will continue and it doesn't have to be at the cost of selling our souls to communists.

I hate to say this, but George Bush is looking more like Bill Clinton every day. I hear Powell playing the loose cannon. Fleisher never seems to know anything. And now this. It makes me wonder who is running the show, if anyone, and to what end.

So much is going on that we do not know about, and I'll tell you, I'm beginning to believe we shouldn't trust Bush and his gang either.

This article is fluff.

Only real comment was by Blair who is a total Red Teamer. Blair needs to go - yesterday.

ChiCom sycophants like Mufson and ChiCom "moderate" experts and academics like the one quoted have been pushing this great China-US partnership to fight terrorism since 9-12. It's not too different than the Clinton grand vision of the Pax Sino-Americana Strategic Partnership of 1997.

The fact is, if China wants in on this it is on our terms and they will be the ones making serious concessions.

Already they are being slammed and taking it.

Communist Party is in serious trouble after 911.

They put all their eggs in the aid and abet the US' enemies, eg Iran, Iraq, Taliban (directly and via Pakistan whom they gave the capability to make their nuke) basket and tried to put that basket in the US led World Trade system basket and get on that gravy train.

They thought they could straddle the fence forever but they are going to fall off it on one side or the other.

Right now there are demonstrations in China by Muslims against the "Crusader" war -- demonstrations by ethnic Chinese Hui Muslims, not the rebels in Xinjiang, but in the official ChiCom fake religion Mosques.

They are starting in the Mosques and moving to the streets. The ChiComs have clamped down on this info heavily, especially before this APEC meeting.

Well, if all they get is spare parts for their Blackhawks, maybe the worse case is, we get what we pay for and that's it. I'd hate to think that the bright folks in the DoD want to give up anything significant.

I note that this only includes Blackhawk helicopter spare parts... forgive me if I am mistaken, this is not like selling nuclear secrets or anything... far from it. But the only question is, what do we get in return?

Several things come to mind when I read this.

First I think this author is trying to push the idea that 'the Clinton people had it right'. It is a puff piece that is taking shots at the "China-hawks".

Next some of the events in here are very possible. The 1989 sanctions have been the framework of our China policy for a long time, however, those sanctions were ignored by China and the last administration, thus leaving America with no policy at all.

This is quite possibly a re-tooling of the 'engagement' policy into something much more effective than already-ignored-sanctions regime.

The idea of a Sept 11 resulted quid pro quo is a fairy tale. I think there were plans in works long long ago for a much different China policy. Removing the Tian An Men sanctions may mean the start of an actual "China policy" not based on arbitrary garbage. It does not nessesarily mean we are going to be easier on them.

Like I said, this author I think is echoing those 'Clinton had it right' panda huggers...

Right now there is no way to tell unless Ari comes and does a conference about this and explains it all.

FreeRepublic is being DISTRACTED from the big story. Here it is:

"The U.S. realizes now that China is not its greatest threat, and there is a real chance for the two countries to become partners," said Zhu Feng, an international relations scholar at Beijing University."

I still say that China is our biggest threat in the world. Not Iraq, Iran, or Pakistan and Bin Laden. China is supporting one way or another all of these factions to destabilize the West. Do you all remember last spring when we were wondering if he dared to take this trip after the E-3 incident? Now we aren't even focused on it. He's selling his new allies our military goods, as well as reaffirming their desire to swallow Taiwan. And we, at Free Republic, aren't even focusing on it.

Not only is it ok for communists to kill those of faith but its ok for islamic nations to fund terror? I thought bush was a conservative and now he is letting his Sec of state or someone else propose this? Don't conservatives respect the christian right? I did not know they thought it is ok to fund terror in the middle east and regulate christians in china with offical state churches and to kill and arrest fulng gong members because they want a democracy.

Ok I guess this is the new republican party platform. Who knew?

At least Clinton bombed their embassy for spying on us... It's pretty clear Uncle Prescott Bush is in charge of the China Office at the Whitehouse today. If anybody doesn't know who Prescott is, just visit this site.

Unfortunately, it appears foreign investors have own controlling shares of the First Family.
