SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A man tried to overpower a Greyhound bus driver in Utah late Wednesday, but gave up the supposed hijacking attempt and fled in a different vehicle, the state Highway Patrol said.
The man apparently tried to overtake the driver after ranting about hijackings, said Doug McCleve, patrol spokesman. Bus driver Gene Savage told KUTV television that the man grabbed the steering wheel and said he was going to flip the bus.
The driver said he kicked the man away and was able to stop the bus. The estimated 40 passengers got out unharmed, McCleve said.
McCleve said it is not clear if the man and a woman allegedly involved in the incident had a weapon, although some of the passengers said the couple threatened them with a bomb.
The two suspects got out of the bus, which had stopped about 15 miles east of Salt Lake City, and were picked up by another vehicle, McCleve said.
The car fled and officers had yet to track it down.
Officers ran a bomb-sniffing dog through the bus to look for explosives. An initial check turned up no bomb, McCleve said.
Earlier this month, a Croatian man slashed the neck of a Greyhound bus driver in Tennessee, causing a crash that killed seven passengers.

Bottom line: the American people need to resolve that if they are in this type of situation, that they need to stand up and defend themselves, and take the instigators of this kind of incident down fast and hard, and kept subdued to police arrive. He should have never gotten past the first person with the bomb threat.

I don't think Utah is the smartest place to try a bus hijacking. I hear the locals are not only pretty good at closing loopholes, but even better shots.

Let's hear it for the very coordinated bus driver! I can't imagine struggling for control of a bus AND kicking someone off at the same time. Hurrah! Give that driver a bonus and some time off. He's just made it harder for bus-hijackers by showing there'd be a fight.

"Bottom line: the American people need to resolve that if they are in this type of situation, that they need to stand up and defend themselves" How could those p**sies on the bus let them get away? No mention of anybody with courage except for the driver. I am furious over that. The vast majority of sheeple WILL cower in fright, even if it means dying. Unfortunately, the Heroes of Flight 93 are the exception, not the rule. The driver should have kicked everyone off the bus and driven to the station by himself. Cowards don't deserve to ride.

About a year ago, I read about a pair of robbers that tried to hold up a bus in Mexico.
The passengers (mostly women, children, and old people), beat them to death,
threw their bodies out on the side of the road, and continued to their destination.
With just a little encouragement, Americans could make airplanes, busses (?) and subways just as safe.
Of course, we would need to get away from "rely on the government/police to keep you safe" mentality.
And our government has worked very hard to get that mindset out there in the 1st place.

Well stated...
You are correct.
The picture of this:

I remember reading about that incident. The people were plain villagers who had lived with the reality of these kinds of events for so long that they had nothing but disdain for the perps - leaving them by the side of the road was expedient, but it also sent a message.

The main point that is being missed here is how they were picked up so quickly by another car. They were obviously being followed for a purpose. Also, no nationality profile?

Precisely, no govt investigation, job done, destination reached, life goes on, but not for the perps. Being legally armed, would be of some assistance in all these situations, but at present, you in most cases would be illegaly armed, and there is a huge difference, and great personal risk.
Of course the second amendment would be considered some justification for being armed in any circumstance, but most state governments, consider their laws to supercede the Constitution, and have instituted law that makes you a criminal if you exercise your God given rights under the Constitution.
