Global Sensors React to 9/11 Disaster
Princeton University ^ | Sept 2001 | Roger Nelson

Posted on 10/21/2001 10:48:51 AM PDT by spycatcher

The following material shows the behavior of the Global Consciousness Project's network of 38 REG devices called "eggs" placed around the world as they responded during various periods of time surrounding September 11. These eggs generate random data continuously and send it for archiving and analysis to a dedicated server at Princeton University. We analyse the data to determine whether the normally random array of values shows structure correlated with global events. The underlying motivation for this work is to discover whether there is evidence for an anomalous interaction driving the eggs to non-random behavior. In a metaphoric sense, we are looking for evidence of a developing global consciousness that might perceive and react to events with deep meaning.

The whole world reeled in disbelief and horror as the news of the terrorist attack and the unspeakable tragedy unfolded. The EGG network registered an unmistakable and profound response.

One tailed odds against chance. The large peak is September 11, 9:30 AM.

Introduction

I want to acknowledge that I like the idea of Global Consciousness, but that this idea is really an aesthetic speculation. I don't think we have real grounds to claim that the statistics and graphs representing the data prove the existence of a global consciousness. On the other hand, we do have strong evidence of anomalous structure in what should be random data, and clear correlations of these unexplained departures from expectation with well-defined events that are of special importance to people. The events share a common feature, namely, that they engage our attention, and draw us in large numbers into a common focus.

This is a report of what we see in the data recorded on September 11, 2001 and the surrounding period. It is the best description we can give of measurements and effects that are essentially mysterious. We do not know how the correlations that arise between electronic random event generators and human concerns come to be, and yet, the results of our analyses are unequivocal. We cannot explain the presence of stark patterns in data that should be random, nor do we have any way of divining their ultimate meaning, yet there is an important and uniquely powerful message here. When we ask why the disaster in New York and Washington and Pennsylvania should appear to be responsible for a strong signal in our world-wide network of instruments designed to generate random noise, there is no obvious answer. When we look carefully and discover that the eggs might reflect our shock and dismay even before our minds and hearts express it, we confront a still deeper mystery. This network, which we designed as a metaphoric EEG for the planet, responded as if it were measuring brain waves on a planetary scale. We do not know if there is such a thing as a global consciousness, but if there is, it was moved by the events of September 11, 2001. We do not know how, but it appears that the coherence and intensity of our common reaction created a sustained pulse of order in the random flow of numbers from our instruments. These patterns where there should be none look like reflections of our concentrated focus, as the riveting events drew us from our individual concerns and melded us into an extraordinary coherence. Maybe we became, briefly, a global consciousness.

2-tailed probabilities were also calculated (to register extreme decreases as well as increases in the deviations)

Dean Radin separated the results by location

"Based upon an analysis of 3 months of GCP data, I conclude that a statistical anomaly occurred that was associated with the date, time and general location of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. There is also evidence that the anomaly began to appear a few hours before the widely visible events unfolded."

Summary: Through analysis of 144 sliding windows, from 5 minutes to 12 hours, in 5 minute increments, we find that over a period of 3 months, one date is associated with a statistical anomaly: September 11, 2001. On this date, the time range appearing most often is 6 AM - 10 AM, peaking around 9:00 - 10:00 AM, and the location primarily the East Coast of the USA.

It looks like the data is not random chance. But that is a long way from claiming a global consciousness able to affect electronic instruments.

"Wonder if they had this set up during the OKC bombing."

Or During Waco.

You must be kidding! This was set up to get Art Bell's attention so they could use the notariety to get FEDERAL GRANTS!!!

I'll dive in. Jesus talked at length about faith. He talked about faith not as a doctrinal belief, but more as mind-over-matter. People refer to 'The Faith'. But that is an erosion of what Jesus meant. You are brave to post this. And it could well be a fraud. I have no idea. It might be legit. Regardless, there is something to our consciousness affecting the world.

The Flag thus has an impact on the world. And more importantly, prayer through FAITH has an impact on the world. We must pray for the troops and their leaders. And we must know that prayer does matter. One kid praying for a candy bar might not see it falling from the sky, but millions of people praying for something important have rarely been ignored.

Note however, that Islamic fanatics have faith too. This is a mystical war as well as a physical war.

Freegards....

For those interested, here's the best book I could find on the general subject. It happens to be written by the same Dean Radin as above:

The Conscious Universe : The Scientific Truth of Psychic Phenomena

Excellent point. It could be a hoax for cash. I don't trust colleges one bit. Regardless, people have seen first hand that the mind has a resource that few comprehend. People who watch the Art Bell show claim they have caused rain. I don't know all the facts. But it is very interesting to note.

If you know much about quantum physics and action at a distance, it's easily possible. In fact scientific studies of prayer and people using thought to modify scientific results in another room are very sound.

Nobel Laureate in Physics Brian Josephson said "Radin shows the evidence in favour of paranormal existence is overwhelming".

Yes! And by all means, don't miss Alan Sokal's seminal essay Transgressing the Boundaries: Toward a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity I suspect that he anticipated these astonishing results.

A hoax would kill any grants and they would be booted from Princeton. They're just putting out raw data for others to examine and correlate. The hard science side of this stuff is just now starting to become accepted by the mainstream. Peer review of the promising specific experiments is the next step in the ongoing process of study.

Thanks...here's a link

Transgressing the Boundaries: Towards a Transformative Hermeneutics of Quantum Gravity

"...This phenomenon -- which Einstein termed ``spooky'' -- imposes a radical reevaluation of the traditional mechanistic concepts of space, object and causality, and suggests an alternative worldview in which the universe is characterized by interconnectedness and (w)holism: what physicist David Bohm has called ``implicate order''. New Age interpretations of these insights from quantum physics have often gone overboard in unwarranted speculation, but the general soundness of the argument is undeniable."

I agree that our Christian faith and prayer can change things, but so (it appears from the prayer studies) can other faiths. At what point does good triumph over evil? That's the grand mystery. A related article here...

Unfortunately the whole field of advanced quantum physics and the science of mind-matter interaction smacks of Eastern religions and New Age mumbo jumbo. But it's more real than the hypothesis of evolution. We need to learn and understand more about the fundamentals of both mind, matter and light. Right now we know enough to know that we don't *really* know what's happening at the core of it all.

Y'know, I gotta say this... Mysticism has been given way more latitude than the scientific method in all societies!!! I prefer to attribute much of what we see to the power of suggestion and the terrible power of symbolism.

My first reaction to this stuff is watching alla the dang Hippies treckin to Mount Shasta during the Cold War and chantin "Ahooooooooooommmmmmmmmmm," hopin the USSR would destroy it's own nuclear capability due to some kinda "Mind Meld" with 'em!!!

The live TV pictures from the orbiting Command Module at Christmas of 1969 of the "Earth Rise" over the horizon of the "dead" Moonscape created the super-power symbolism to launch the totalitarian environmental movement with 1970's Earth Day, etc., etc. NOW THERE IS SOMETHING YOU DON'T EVEN NEED SCIENCE TO MEASURE!!!

I do NOT like to pooh-pooh actual science, but so much of the sensationalism of pseudo-science and "Non-Science-Non-Sense" these days, particularly promoted on shows like Art Bell's just shows how popular the superficial "belief systems" can become that "the public" sucks up so blindly that it makes me intensely skeptical!!!

The EnvironMental "Community" have built an entire "Enviral/GovernMental COMPLEX" on such sophistry!!!

The elected political leaders dare not oppose this because the ignorant public has bought it with intense media complicity. A little truthful "enlightenment" based on legitimate science and constitutional understanding is what is needed.

Explore this!

I felt a great disturbence in the Force, as if millions of voices cried out in terror, then were suddenly silenced. - Obi Wan Kenobi

Sounds about right to me. My brother was not watching the news when it happened, felt something was going on in the world, then turned it on. Spooky.

At the moment the first attack on the WTC took place, I was walking my dog on Manhattan's East Side in the East 40s. Didn't have a radio, didn't know what had just happened.

But my dog, a three year old spaniel bitch, knew something was up. She startled howling and making a noise between a low growl and a whine. Kept it up irregularly for the rest of the walk, and I even recall saying to her, "What's your problem today."

When I got back to my apt. building, the doorman told me the first tower had been hit.

Weird, no?
