WHERE IS THE CDC NOW THAT WE REALLY NEED IT?

Throughout the Clinton years the storm of bio-terrorism was gathering, yet the CDC is best remembered for its attacks on cholesterol and tobacco use. Diet and tobacco are things which, as individuals, we can control. But they are also high profile political issues for the Democratic Party. The defense against bio-terrorism, however, goes to the issue of “common defense,” an area in which we must trust the government. Much has been written about how Clinton “dismantled” our defense capabilities by undermining the military. Building on initiatives started during the Carter Administration, he also “dismantled” our bio-defense capability by diverting the focus of the Department of Health and Human Services and the CDC.

They're busy trying to ban guns.

I concur with that. Over the last ten years they've essentially become a stalking-horse for the Democrats' favorite political and social fetishes, to the point of losing all credibility for their original purpose.

Doing ship-shod gun-control studies.

My Dad was a research pharmacologist for the DOD. According to him, both the USSR and the USA realised after they started doing research on germ and chemical warfare that it was too uncontrollable in order to be a viable weapon except in extreme circumstances. Whatever we used would be sure to come back on our heads, not only as a counter attack, but that the agents were too unpredictable. There was a high probability the biological and chemical agents would kill you as you were delivering them, or in the case of disease come back into your own populations. Obviously, during the cold war, the specialists never thought about delivering anthrax through the mail! This is the key to understanding why the CDC is so behind in this recent attack. We really ARE in a new type of warfare.

If the CDC does as good a job at controlling anthrax as it has done with the HIV epidemic, we're in deep, deep trouble.

For what Clinton has done to this country, I am amazed when he goes out in public, that he's not chased down the street by a mob of stick carrying, stone throwing great Americans just behind him.

Trying, trying, trying once again to prove that HIV is the cause of AIDS. Can't stop now just because a few people are coming down with anthrax infections.

Just kidding of course, but after watching the CDC push junk science to the absolute limit with the HIV=AIDS fraud, I am afraid that I have very little confidence in their ability to help us now when we really need it.

The CDC has been incompetent for much longer than you think. Ask the victims of the 1976 swine flu vaccination disaster, for instance. And remember that disaster the next time you see someone on this forum yakking how we must all be vaccinated for flu, flu is more dangerous than anthrax (!), yada, yada, yada.

Certainly, the Swine Flu innoculation had its problems mainly because it had to be rushed into procuction, as the article explains. The issue is that the CDC at the time was at least an orginazation willing and able to rise to the occaision! Now, 25 years later after CARTER and CLINTON got fininshed with it, all they want to do is take our guns and smokes and when we get hit with a real threat, it's Keystone Cops time.

I took the Swine Flu shot with no problems, as did many people. Same is true with the Anthrax shot. We should have been trying to make it better rather than dropping our defenses to a known threat. Even it it had been available on a purely voluntary basis, it would have the effect of dimishing the terror factor.

This is a war and their weapon is terror. Preparation and knowledge defeat terror. CDC and the rest of the establishment dropped the ball.
