WASHINGTON -- When the Soviet Union took on Afghanistan, its troops found themselves crawling, terrified, through a vast network of mountain caves studded with knives and booby traps, pursuing moujahedeen fighters who seemed to melt into mountainsides like the night itself.
Although Taliban leaders claim that they will use the same tactic to thwart the United States, their ability to do so when confronted with sophisticated weaponry and highly trained forces may be more myth than reality, former and current defense officials and military analysts say.

Nice graphics. Wonder if their tunnels will resist a "bunker buster" down to 100 feet???
NOT.

No, I don't think so! hehehe!

Excellent graphics. I really think the press is overestimating the Taliban. I'm sure the military knows the true score. We are light years ahead in technology of where the Soviets were when they battled the Afghans. I honestly believe we have already gutted their forces and maybe even eliminated Bin Laden. But when you are fighting a war it is always best to transmit lowered expectations to the media. The Taliban are on horseback and some with flintlock rifles. It is a good strategy to just let them stay up in the mountains. Sooner or later they will have to come down and at that time we will completely eliminate them.

I wonder what would happen if the entrances of the caves or tunnels were closed with bombs/explosives.... I'm sure they could be reopened but that would take some time.

There is no need to go in the caves. We are as Bush says slowly surrounding the Taliban. We don't wnat to kill them.
What we have done and are doing is preventing them from getting food and amunition. Next to nothing is going into Afghanistan. No nation on earh will supply them. They have as much food, fuel and ammunition as is in the country.
Have you noticed that we have bombed Red Cross food storage buildings at least twice. We said we were sorry then did it again. Have you seen the dark black smoke from bombing? Have you heard about the huge explosions? Have you heard about UN food warehouses bombed? That is fuel, and amunition dumps being destroyed.
If you have heard these reports then you get a glimmer of what is happening. We have cut off new supplies to the taliban and are now destroying current supplies. When people are in caves they have to be supplied with food. Sooner or later they run out. The more of them there are to feed, the quicker they run out of food. When the Russians were fighting them we actually sent them pack mules to resupply. There are no roads. And we shipped the stuff through Pakistan. That route is cut off. All Routes are cut off. All access for supplies to be delivered by land, or air has been cut off.
The name of this war is to run them out of food and secondarily out of ammo. There is little need to kill them in the caves. We do need some video for the media, but that is not our prime thrust.
Keep watching. This is a siege. That is why Bush keeps talking about how long it will take. It will take as long as it takes to run them out of food plus 30 days.
We will win this big time. It will be very inexpensive. If we were going to go after them in caves, we would have to call up a lot of troops and draft more men. We are doing neither.
We are going to win this with few troops and almost no deaths. With a military tactic nearly as old as war. As General Patton was fond of saying, the weapons change, but the tactics don't. We are on a very measured and certain path to victory.
Have you noticed there is no Swartzkoff in this war? There is no Field General in the news. There is no Eisenhower or MacArthur. There is no Westmoreland. why?
Most likely because a Field General would have to talk to the press.. So no Swartzkoff type is on the scene. And what does that say to you? Hmmmmmm.? It says a lot to me.

Sounds Encouraging
One note I caught from the Taliban's declarations earlier is that they can hold out for months and months in the countryside and the caves, up to six months. I thought to myself that month seven would look pretty good for us.
I'm also thinking that by taking the war to them during the winter via raids and whatever, then we'd be fighting on our terms, which they have no experience. I've seen the thread on that mountain unit using cross country skis, etc. Haven't heard of anything like an armored snowmobile, but those could be useful.

I agree. And speaking of bin Laden,I wonder why he hasn't answered CNN's request for an interview yet?Anybody got any guesses? It might be because he's afraid that his hideaway might be discovered but if that's the case, why not just say no?

I like that idea! But I don't think,I could be wrong, they could be reopened. It's sure worth a try.

"We said we were sorry then did it again" I loved that part!

And to think I thought both times were mistakes! Silly me! lol!We sure do have some smart people running this war, don't we?!This all makes a lot of sense.I seem to remember reading another post with ideas similar to yours either on FR or another conservative site.So you think they have food for just 30 days? I thought I read somewhere that they had supplies for a longer period. It could have just been propaganda, nevertheless, this is all very encouraging. Thanks Common Tator!

The UN even gets it. They said today, bombing --> no problemo, food getting to the needy. The innocents fled to the borders. All remain in the cities are the enemies, others sympathetic to their cause and the not too bright. Darwin had a phrase for this.
Every building in Kabul or Kandahar is a target. I still subscribe the the smoking hole theory. The theory states that the Taleban earned the right to have their major strongholds reduced to a smoking hole when they rebuked the USA to hand over their terrorists. Other brighter regimes in the region are taking notes.

Agree completely. We should not fight their kind of war; that is, going into the caves and being subjected to booby traps, landmines, and ambushes. They fully expect us to do that. Better plan is to destroy their supply line and wait for them to scurry out like rats. They will, eventually. And without artillery, infantry, armor, or air support, they're finished. It's just a matter of time.

So. Who cares if they stay in caves forever.Actually, I think that's the plan. A bunch of holy warriors sealed up inside caves would be a threat to nobody.

Tell the world they'd interviewed him in downtown Djakarta instead of a cave...

I was just reading the diary of a Scots Sergeant who fought in the second Anglo-Afghan war. His unit was cut off owing to the heavy snows in the mountains, but they kicked the living daylights out of the Afghanis.
