PESHAWAR (JANG): Representatives of Taliban Supreme Leader Mullah Mohammad Omar and Hezb-e-Islami Afghanistan Chief Gulbaddin Hekmatyar are putting the final touches to a deal to cooperate against the United States-led coalition.
High-level Afghan sources said that the Taliban have expressed their readiness to hand over control of a few provinces to Hezb after the deal. Taliban have agreed to give Nimroz, Baghdees, Farah and Herat provinces to Hezb, but Hezb also wants the control of Nangrahar and Logar provinces.
These sources said that the meetings between the two sides have been held in Peshawar, Islamabad and Kabul. They confirmed that Hezb representatives have also met Taliban Ambassador to Pakistan Mullah Abdus Salam Zaeef in Islamabad. Mullah Zaeef has gone to Kabul to seek Mullah Omar's advice on various questions raised in his meetings with the Hezb. The Taliban ambassador will finalise the cooperation deal after his arrival in Islamabad.
According to the sources, a Taliban delegation will formalise the deal with Hezb in Tehran with Hezb leader Hekmatyar, who has been living there since the takeover of Kabul by the Taliban militia. A majority of Taliban ministers are favouring cooperation with Hekmatyar, said one Afghan source.
Out There News note:
Hekmatyar's Hezb-e Islami was the strongest of the seven Mujahedin guerrilla groups which fought the Soviet presence in Afghanistan between 1979 and 1989 with Western and Arab support. He was a member of the government set up after Soviet troops withdrew, which included representatives of all the groups. But the government broke up in civil war and Hekmatyar's forces bombarded Kabul in 1994, killing thousands of civilians.

A deal among criminals - I wonder if the Afghani slaves to be traded have a voice in their barter?

Looks like Taliban is outflanking us diplomatically and we are about to have a major setback on the afghan alliance scene.Oh, how will we ever cope? Mohammad Omar is making an alliance with Gulbaddin Hekmatyar! Woe is us! We only have 160 nations on our side! We merely have with us the countries that defeated Hitler, Mussolini and Tojo! How can we ever go up against Omar and Gulbaddin?
Face it: You have never heard of Hekmatyar before this moment. Neither has anybody else. Zero plus zero still equals nada.

Looks like Taliban is outflanking us diplomatically and we are about to have a major setback on the afghan alliance sceneI concur. The Taliban appears to have some tricks up the sleeve. I think the US strategy in Afghanistan is quite pointless. They still want to contain the war, instead of just nuking the living stuff out of the Taliban outright, and moving on to the real targets, like Iraq and Iran

All those provinces are on the Iranian border. A big chunk of land. Iranians behind this? Maybe annex "ancient Khorastan"?
Of course, Hekmaytar could be backstabbing the T-ban in the future. And I don't know how powerful this guy is. I think I've seen him mentioned as a T-ban adversary, but ver anti-american. web search of his name shows a lot of very bad stuff about this guy...although the USA was his big backer due to his ferocity against the Soviets.

A bunch of alphabet soup gangsters. When are we going to get busy and vaporize these human vermin? Screw the "allies" and the "collateral damage". These "people" only understand and respect power. It's time to show them what we're capable of.

Hezb also wants the control of Nangrahar and Logar provinces.Sounds fishy. Many tribes are in forced cahoots with the Taliban and already control territory. Could be they want out and are axacting a higher price for cooperation.
Upshot, the Taliban is loosing control and becoming concentrated to be better dealt with by the opposition and from within.

So these provinces that may be going under the control of some nonTaliban gangster, they are bordering Iran? While the Qandahar which has Kandahar is bordering Pakistan.
Was there much al-Qa'ida training camp activity or incursion into those provinces next to Iran? Do we really care if this guy takes over and repulses U.S. forces, if we aren't going to be going there necessarily?
And a final thought. The Taliban may be really weakening if it is having to hand over provinces to others. The line that the new gangster in town is going to help them fight Americans may be just cover for the fact that the only real story is that they are losing control.
Buck up, folks, this may be good news.

Sounds to me like we've broken their command and control of the western provinces.
They're offering Hekmatyr what they no longer have.
His asking for the two eastern provinces shows he seems to have seen through them.

LOL, so they've lined up some aging warrior and they're promising him a third of the country. Somehow I think the local chieftans might have a thing or two to say about that. Besides, this guy was bloody, people won't forget that.

No, the camps weren't there. And I doubt that the Iranians would tolerate them. I believe the camps are all around the Pakistan border. Pakistan benefitted from them since they produced terrorists/freedom fighters for Kashmir.

You better be concerned about this development. Hekmtayar is the last person you want returned into Afghani "politics." He is an evil creature similar to bin Laden and also has the support of the Iranian religious clique (which remains the real power there).
