[history]
A panel of scientists is on a fast track to review Clinton administration studies that last year cut off water to more than a thousand farmers in the Klamath Valley of Oregon and California to protect endangered fish.
The panel's findings are due by Jan. 31, 2002, to allow farmers, who irrigate their fields with the water, and federal agencies to prepare for the next growing season.

Thanks for posting this article, kattracks. It's good news, I pray.
The Klamath Basin farmers haven't been in the news lately because of the war and bio-terror and they need our support.
Let's hope the present climate in America will force us to get our priorities straight and rescind the Endangered Species Act.
God bless the farmers, our troops, our police and firefighters, our President, and our country.

It would be better news if the Bush administration were pushing to make the endangered species act rational instead of tyrannical. They could make it a rational environmental act by requiring payment for land or value taken, by defining "species" as the commonly known definition as a group of animals that breed with one another and produce viable offspring, It is hard to see how any sane person could argue with these changes, yet they would eliminate 99% of the abuses that are now happening under the act.

You are right on with regard to the definition of species. In recent years, the definition of species has been greatly broadened. Now it refers to any population group which is somehow isolated, for instance, by some physical boundary, or even simply by some preferential choice.
The 'new' definition of species would put Asians, Black, Caucasions as seperate species. It would even regard, say, Italian-Americans who live in a small ethnic Italian community in the U.S. as a separate species.
It is a ludicrous definition, but it keeps the money and prestege rolling into the bio-diversity community because they can 'discover' indangered species anywhere.

Bush has asked Congress to revisit ESA.

Thomas Hardy is the biologist at Utah State that wrote the study that allowed NMFS to join in the assault on the farmers. Hardy is a "hired gun" with much experience in western environmental issues. The "Hardy Flows Report", parts 1 & 2, was a "desktop" report that required no on the ground study and dealt with COHO downstream. Part 2 has never been published.
On the other hand, David Vogel is a biologist that has worked for the farmers for 10 years. He has worked for both NMFS and FWS. He was never allowed to present his opinions to the Agencies. They didn't want to hear it.
There is an article, Water in the West, published at RangeMagazine.com that deals with Klamath as well as many water issues in the west. This pdf file is lengthy but very informative.

It would even regard, say, Italian-Americans who live in a small ethnic Italian community in the U.S. as a separate species. The liberals would go right out of their collective minds if someone started going on about "the endangered Southern Mississippi Black Man".
It would give the lie to their crap and expose stuff like the "Northern Right Whale" for the sham it is.
On the other hand, if a non-fictional Soprano-like family had the foresight to get themselves declared "the endangered Northern New Jersey Sicilian- Americans" could they get the FBI to lay off 'em?

Thanks Kattracks! I'm glad your not letting the fire go out on this one. Since 911, this is only the 2nd post I've seen on Klamath. Granted, I don't spend a lot of time here everyday but we can't let this get lost in the shuffle.

Very good news. I knew that Gale Norton would try to find a solution.
Of course that won't placate some who wanted her head on a platter when this crisis first started.
