More than a 1,000 people gathered in Budapest on Sunday night to answer the call of Gábor Demszky, Mayor of Budapest, to light a candle to commemorate the thousands of victims whose lives were claimed by the terrorist attacks on the US on September 11.

"New York and Budapest are twin cities," said Demszky, at the event. "We owe this to all the innocent victims who died there." The event was broadcast live on radio and television. Crowds started gathering at 5pm at Hôsök tere (Heroes’ square). Demszky was accompanied by Justice Minister Ibolya Dávid and Minister of Youth and Sports Minister Tamás Deutsch.

Ya' know, it would have been nice to have seen this on the news or in our newspapers, considering Americans will always be in mourning over WTC and there's how many Americans of Hungarian descent? Some probably have stuffed green peppers cooking in their ovens today. It's a month after the attack and Hungarians already had three minutes of silence and their firetrucks with black ribbons and religious services and they have two tv stations over there and most people depend on public transportation and they held a demonstration for us, but what do we see on the tv? According to Mancow this morning, Leslie Stahl traveling to Iraq for a pro-Iraq story on 60 Minutes, Afghan children, Afghan children and more Afghan children (but no mention of the babies and children killed in the WTC and the airplanes) and we hardly ever see these encouraging stories on the news.

Jerusalem & New York

Mr. Giuliani spoke to the crowd by live telephone hookup from New York, reportedly at the invitation of Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert.

"New York and Jerusalem are closer than ever before," Mr. Giuliani told the crowd, adding that the two cities have "the same values." "Both the United States and Israel are seeking to defend and perpetuate the same values of democracy, freedom, respect for the law and human life," he said.

According to a close adviser and former aide to Mr. Giuliani, Bruce Teitelbaum, the mayor had no knowledge of the contents of the speeches or the tenor of the rally. He "simply wanted to express his solidarity with the people of Israel at this very difficult time and to explain to the Israeli people that the United States is fighting terrorism and that it is important to eradicate terrorism forever, wherever it exists."
