October 30, 2001 -- DID A conservative Catholic college kick out an undergraduate for publicly defending America against far-right campus extremists in the wake of the Sept. 11 attacks?
Or is he a chronic troublemaker wrapping himself in the flag in an attempt to justify disruptive behavior?

"This group, which has no official name, consists of students and faculty plagued with several obnoxious political views, such as: representative government, like we have in America, is evil, and a Catholic king is what the world needs now."About 18 months ago, there was a herd of these panty-wearing bedwetters at Free Republic. They were embarrassing.

I know it's not the popular thing to do ... but when the college holds your career, future in their hands; you have to play by their rules. Once you are out, and become a successful alumni, then you can hold them by the short hairs, and squeeze to your heart's content. But while you are a student, you are a victim just waiting to be raped. This crap happens all of the time, and until a class action suit sets a precident, and bankrupts a college (which I sincerely hope happens), this stuff will continue to happen.

Looks more like dreher@nypost.com is taking the oppurtunity to bash the conservative name more than report news. You might excuse "monarchists" among college kids; hell, they probably have navel and nose rings at the same time.
There are actually Catholic ADULTS who long for a king living among us. I can actually picture them eating dinner out of a bowl on the floor.

Sounds like some of the posters we still have on Free Republic today..

...says his shock and anger over the attacks mushroomed when friends told him some ultra-conservative students were heard approving of the deeds as a blow to capitalism and democracy. Ok, let me get this straight - ultra-conservatives (or any flavor of conservative - such as my own, paleo-, which could definately be described as ultra-conservative) are against capitalism? Uhh, hello? Anyone home?
Maybe it's opposite day today and no one told me. Next I'll hear Democrats wanting to abolish income tax.

I guess you aren't aware of some of the traditionalist Catholics out there. Some of 'em are pretty wacky--Monarchists, folks who want to ressurect the Guild system--real castle-in-the-air types who think that reversion to medieval times would be a great idea.

Ok, let me get this straight - ultra-conservatives (or any flavor of conservative - such as my own, paleo-, which could definately be described as ultra-conservative) are against capitalism? No. There are "ultra-conservatives" (a VERY small number) who maintain that the American Revolution was an abomination, and that the U.S. would be better off with a Catholic king.
On a Catholic college campus, "monarchists" are, most likely, dog-faced pinheads who couldn't buy a girl or a clue.

Setting aside your rather heated language, I find myself in agreement with you. The crowd at Christendom responsible for this comedy are those who hate Lincoln and the American Founding. We did see quite a bit from them in the last 18 months, and we see some still ... a weird alliance of libertarians and anti-enlightenment paleo-cons.
Not wishing to start a new fight with you, but it does seem right to note that my man, Alan Keyes, has offended both groups, at Christendom and elsewhere, by his defense of the founding.
Best to you,
Richard F.

I think you accurately described it. This is essentially psychological rape. The guy stood up for our nation and paid the price. One can only wonder if the backgrounds of the perps were looked into. Almost certainly not.
At first I thought one of you wrote this. It all seemed a bit odd - Monarchists? Then there was tell of the 24 y/o Navy vet whose veteran's benefits were about to run out. If that is so he finished his Navy tour when ordinary people were in Jr High or were lower classmen in HS. I usually like Dreher, but I'm wondering if we've all been had by this article.

... a weird alliance of libertarians and anti-enlightenment paleo-cons. We had some of these "monarchists" at the University of Dallas back in the '70s; they snickered during Western Civ class, dropped raisins on the mall so they could find each other, and had severe Vitamin D deficiencies in the Coppertone age.
Uglier than most, even then they knew that, whatever side they were on in a democracy, they'd lose.
Better to suck up to a king as a troll than to try to sell ideas in a world where the high cheekbones and daily bathers get ahead.

As a graduate of Christendom College I am outraged at the recent activities of the administration. The idea on which Christendom was and is based is one of free exchange of ideas. Unfortunately, Mr. Marschner is being punished for publicly responding to a public view. The people involved have no fear of promoting thier views on campus because they do not have to defend those views, the administration does that for them by punishing anyone who does stand up and address the more excentric members of the college community. It has been mentioned that these people who hold the Anti-American views must be punks or degenerates, however this could not be farther from the truth, they are for the most part upstanding students who have been tricked by a few but very talented and cunning professors into holding these outrageous Anti-American views. The Administration thinks they are working for the common good of the school by expelling Mr. Marschner, however this could not be farther from the truth. Students are afraid to speak up even in class now do to fears that their views might be used against them by the Administration if that Administration sees fit. The Administration should take a step by and get ride of the real trouble makes; the Professors who are promoting this views which Mr. Marschner stood up against
