[history]
A nationwide FBI alert was ordered after Canadian intelligence officials intercepted a coded message sent to Afghanistan by a suspected associate of Osama bin Laden's terrorist network, suggesting possible new attacks this week, federal law enforcement authorities said yesterday.
The message, authorities said, said a major event would take place "down south" over the next few days, although there was no elaboration.

It's with that in mind that I can't say that people have any right to think... I supported his nomination back in January because we needed a victory...but this guy creeps me out.

Wonder how long until we see a poll on whether the warning should have been issued?

Dear Mr. Ashcroft,
Americans understand your deep philosophy in the principle of Law, and bringing lawbreakers to trial in a court of justice. However, due to the latest developments, 5-6,000 innocent Americans were not accorded this privelege.
In all due respect, given the reality of the murder of innocent American civilians, we may need to be more pragmatic in dealing with the enemies of the United States.
If those in the Justice Department are murdered by those who your department defends, then the Rule of Law in this country will have no meaning.

Bump!
To: kattracks
Mr. Ashcroft issued the nationwide alert Monday, the second time the Justice Department had made the notice public, although he offered no details on intended targets or how the attacks would be carried out. He said the warning was made public because Americans were smart enough to "make good judgments" about what to do with the information.Maybe Americans are smart enough, but the government has yet to show it is smart enough to ROUND UP EVERY NON-CITIZEN FROM MUSLIM/ARAB COUNTRIES, send them home on the next flight, and tell them to re-apply, after the ban on immigration due to national security crisis is over, if ever.

Let's complete that quote.
It's with that in mind that I can't say that people have any right to think that the risks have abated as it relates either to the anthrax or other terrorist risks," he said.
Takes on a whole new meaning now. He's simply saying there still exists chances of more terrorist attacks in one form or another. What in that makes you doubt your previous support of Ashcroft?

The un-"PATRIOT ACT" comes to mind! The enmey still lays down to sleep with us every night. Our borders are still open. No one has been deported. Should I go on? I too, supported Ashcroft. Hindsite is 20/20. Blackbird.

The wording of his statement -- that he is the arbiter of what people have a right to think is just scary coming from the USAG.

the part in this piece that worries me is that we have just notified our enemies that
we can decode their messages!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Anyone out there think that we would have won WWII without SECRETLY tracking Hitler's communications?

Not so sure about that. The story keeps saying "authorities said," not unnamed sources. Maybe it's disinfo, but I don't think it's a leak.
To: kattracks
Authorities said that while the message had no specifics on the intended targets or the method of delivery, U.S. intelligence officials believe the coded dispatch is an indication that terrorist cells operating in this country, Canada and Europe are free to plan and carry out strikes without first seeking the permission from leaders of bin Laden's al Qaeda group in AfghanistanParaphrase. We don't know what, where, when, or how anything that may happen will happen, but we think it might. DUH! And they are paid how much to gather this earth shattering information? Incompetence on the part of the FiBbIes led in part to 9/11, and now they issue a new warning weekly.Even a blind dog finds a bone eventually. The nature of guerilla warfare (terrorism) is not having to answer to central authority, but small cells acting independently with a single focus. If they don't/can't see the problem, they need to find new jobs, McDonalds is hiring.

Another reason I hope and pray this article is disinformation of some kind.

Maybe it's because I'm used to hearing the phrase "you have no right to think...etc" It must be a southern thing. Down south it's just another way of saying "there is no reason to think such a thing". It has nothing to do with "rights". It falls under the same category as "fixin to"....it's a southern term. There may be reasons for your doubt but that statement ain't one of 'em.

Well, tomorrow is the deadline for the 'alert'. Do you think anything will come of it?
Or do you think the alert was another way for Ridge/Ministry Homeland Defense, to claim that they 'probably' averted it by declaring the alert?
If nothing happens, how will anyone know that it wasn't a ruse to justify the newest infringements and that homeland defense agency?
Cynical, maybe. But it seems like everytime I turn on FOX, they have SOME poli-critter CROWING about the new agencies and leaders we 'need' to keep the country safe. HA!
To: kattracks
The warning is really not much help - They tell us to be on the alert ? Alert for what - a low flying plane, a person carrying a bomb, someone walking aroung spraying people, a strange looking truck - WHAT? At the first of the week I heard on FOX and CNN that some terrorist had brought a 'dirty bomb' into US through Mexico. Now they are saying Canada - Which is it and what do they think was brought into the Country? Did they say the next 48 hrs? Isn't that over?

The wording of his statement -- that he is the arbiter of what people have a right to think is just scary coming from the USAG.You're sounding paranoid, deluded. Your fear is not warranted by any sensible reading of his comment in context.
To: Kevin Curry
Agree with Kevin. Ashcroft is risking looking like he's crying wolf simply because (unlike other administrations) this one doesn't base what it does on what it might "look like." It bases what it does on whether it's the right thing to do. If they got wind of an attack and didn't tell us it would be worse, and less responsible. Criticizing them for warning us is like a child yelling "don't talk about the hurricane Daddy, you're scaring me!" as the house gets battened down.

There's nothing worse than a corpse with a confused final look on its face. Better, if we are to die, to know who and what is hitting us.
