ANKARA, Nov 1 (Reuters) - NATO's only Muslim member state Turkey said on Thursday it would contribute 90 special force troops to assist the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan.

"Our government has decided to task a special forces unit of around 90 members for the mission (for Afghanistan)," the government said in a written statement issued after a cabinet meeting.

I have the utmost confidence in Turkish troops, let alone their special forces. If this outfit can't go into Bin's neighborhood and get him it would surprise me.

But gee, I thought all Muslim nations were united against the Great Satan in this holy war!

Thank you, Turkey! (They're kind of growing on me. Anything we can do to help you with Greece? Just kidding.)

There are at least two major factions of Muslims in the mid-east / central asia. The Arabs/Wahhabis are radically anti-Western, anti-modern, and totalitarian; the "Turkish" peoples (Turk, Turkmen, Tajik, Uzbek, etc) are more liberated, modern and pro-western. Many of the latter are adopting western culture and economics, and some former soviet republics are even adopting the latin alphabet for their language.

There's a real possibility in this Clash of Civilizations that this subgroup of Islam can be internal ally we need, and the one that can transform the culture to a docile one - after we eliminate the bad guys.

The Republic of Turkey (just turned 78) has been using the latin alphabet since the 1920s.

Thanks, and it's great to be here.

I was irked by the ultra religious on this site at first, but later discovered that there are a bunch of great people around.

Thanks for the link to Clash of Civilizations. Probably the most sincere article about areas also including my neck of the woods written by a westerner I have read in a long time.
