REPUBLICANS AND GAYS: Two recent stories show how deep the shift is among Bush Republicans toward greater acceptance and equality for gay citizens and their families. An Associated Press story highlights the appointment of openly gay Scott Evertz to oversee policy towards HIV and AIDS and of Michael Guest and his husband to the American embassy in Romania. In these two appointments, Bush outdid Clinton, although the number of openly gay appointees in this administration is still woefully tiny. The story also points out the Bush administration's maintenance of anti-discrimination policies in the federal government. It might have added the defense of pharmaceutical profits and therefore HIV research. We're not close to equality yet, but these steps show a real and sensible thaw, and give the lie to those who argued last fall that the Bush administration would have meant a huge step backward for gay equality. Frankly, I'd rather have these gay appointments made entirely on the basis of merit without a song and dance about it than the gay quota-mongering and financial shake-down operation of the Clinton years. Then yesterday, yet another leading Republican came out in favor of equal treatment of gay and straight couples: former president Gerald Ford. In an interview with the dependably fair Detroit News columnist, Deb Price, Ford was asked about gay couples. Ford said: "I think they ought to be treated equally. Period." He went on: 'I have always believed in an inclusive party, in welcoming gays and others into the party." So we now have Republican titans Ford and the late Barry Goldwater on the side of gay inclusion, leading lights like Alan Simpson and Mary Matalin on board, and a current president edging clearly toward acceptance. They make some of the anti-gay hysteria on the radical right seem even more irrelevant than it was even before September 11. - 10/31/2001 12:30:00 AM

Andrew Sullivan: "We're not close to equality yet". Could someone please point out what the heck he is talking about? If you look around at today's liberal culture I would say homosexuals like Sullivan have MORE than equality - just look at hate crimes legislation and all the other crazy laws they are trying to get passed to legitimize their lifestyle. That's a lot more than equal rights, those are SPECIAL RIGHTS.

They make some of the anti-gay hysteria on the radical right seem even more irrelevant than it was even before September 11 Sullivan has enough hate for both sides. He can marginalize those of us who think sodomy is wrong all he wants, but that won't transform his Clymer into a vagina. Some things are just obvious.

I thought it was pretty funy that Andrew Sullivan referred to someone else as being irrelevant.

Sullivan is against hate crime legislation.
When gays can get married and serve in the military like everyone else, and laws which expressly discriminate against gays are repealed, which are still on the books in some places, then and only then will gays will have full equality before the law. In the meantime, you will just have to get used to the public square having to deal with this issue. It is called democracy.

Nobody is barred from getting married as long as they marry a member of the opposite sex. Sounds like equal rights to me.

What is this--Gay Spirit Week or something? We had a group of homosexuals drop in on another thread this past weekend, then there's another couple of threads about Malaysia warning the UK not to send any gay politicians over there, and now Andrew Sullivan toots his own horn again. What's going on here? (Not that there's anything wrong with that......)

"When gays can get married and serve in the military like everyone else"
Last time I checked, gays CAN get married and CAN serve in the military just like anyone else. ALL Americans, that's every single one, currently has the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. They DON'T have the right to marry their pets or multiple spouses or their brothers or sisters.
To: Azzurri
Ya, well if you don't love anyone of the opposite sex, then I guess you lose. But I'm quite confident this one is coming, and sooner rather than later. Attitudes are changing at warp speed. In the meantime, the two sides can circle around each other on this one all day, and get absolutely nowhere. Too many a priori and unverifiable empirical assumptions are involved.

Clymer into a vagina. LOL! So, what we have here is another "Clymer Monologue" from Andrew Sullivan. Gosh, you "cracked me up".
To: RobertBauman
CAN serve in the military just like anyone else Gee, I didn't know all folks in the military had to be in the closet as to their sexuality. Interesting.

I'm tired of the victim litany.
To: AppyPappy
Once gay marriage is legal, you will no longer be tired then because there won't be victims. I've already debated this issue with FR heavyweights like Nonstatist, and I don't plan to do it again with you. (I actually made up my mind on this issue after being in a state of some ambivalence rather recently.) Do a search, and maybe you might learn something. At least you will be able to argue your point of view with a bit more sophistication.

'CLYMER MONOLOGUES'
Go to Amazon.com now and order Andrew Sullivan's latest release. Sure to be number 1 (not). Features Andrew's medical memoirs and inspiring stories from ward "A".
Registered: we could do with a mock-up book cover for this!
To: Torie
IF gay marriage is ever legalized, you mean. Attitudes really don't matter, except to influence votes. And most voters are against same sex marriage. It's votes that count--votes by state. But the point the AppyPappy is trying to make is that there are already prohibitions against marriage. You can't marry your brother or sister, or more than one person, or a person of the same sex. That applies to everybody equally. Now just because you don't want to marry your brother, but Fred wants to marry Ted doesn't mean you're less affected by the laws than Fred or Ted.
If suddenly we are faced with the Incest Lobby, do you think we should let brother and sisters, or uncles and nieces get married? BTW, if anybody wants to marry their first cousin, it's legal in North Carolina!

On second thoughts, drop the book cover idea... after all, what else could you put on the cover of a book titled 'Clymer Monologues'... and we don't wanna go where the sun don't shine.
To: Torie
There are no such thing as "gays." There are simply those who chose to commit sodomy or beastiality, or pedophilia or necrophilia or adultury, and those who don't.

Anyone ever seen what they put on the cover of proctology textbooks?? Are they sponsored by Ansell or something?
