Let's celebrate! One year since the election- share your war stories here!

Posted on 11/06/2001 5:41:18 PM PST by lawgirl

Tomorrow it will be the one year anniversary of the "Eternal Election Day." What were you guys doing last year at this time? One year ago I was munching Tums and watching the final poll numbers, all the while praying furiously that George W. Bush would be elected. Can you guys believe it's been a year? I spent the 2 years of the Bush campaign in law school and I was unable to get away to meet him, but I would love to hear everyone's thoughts and stories about the campaign and all that followed. Did you get to meet W? Did you campaign for him? Did you get to attend any of his rallies?

For those of you that didn't support Bush, has your opinion of him changed in the last year?

I was trying to get that silly chad off my punch card ballot!

No, seriously, I was on my knees in prayer, because I sensed that George W. Bush was the man who could start bringing this country back to righteousness, and I was right!

I'm sorry that the only actual campaigning I did was as an "e-champion". Practically every yard in my county had a Bush sign in it, and Ohio was nice and red, so there weren't a whole lot of people who needed to be convinced around here!

I'm also sorry to say that I didn't know about Free Republic back then. All I had was Rush and Fox, and I could have used a little more support through those awful goretheft days!

I thought GW was going to get killed so I went to bed, in a fit of anger as usual. I nearly choked on my own drool when the alarm clock radio went off and I heard Mr. Bush had not lost... yet.

Thank GOD (and I mean that literally) that Al Gore was unsuccessful in stealing the election.

Our lives may well depend on it. I also mean that literally.

Hubby and I were reminiscing about election night(mare) earlier this evening, remembering how he was in a hotel room somewhere else and I was home alone alternatively dancing for joy and washing down Tumms with red wine.

My husband had an early meeting and, being a sensible man, got to bed at reasonable hour. I, however, stayed up all night; at times bowled over with goreloserman-induced stomach cramps that were so bad I considered admitting myself to the emergency room!

Freerepublic was the ONLY thing that got me through the night, along with a little faith!

"Grateful" for how the election was saved doesn't begin to express how I feel...

I and several others spent an agonizing evening and early morning on the freerepublic IRC chat channel. It was wonderful, and then awful.. ultimately though, it was wonderful. I made a few friends that night, as we tended to each others wounds, and gave words of encouragement to each other..

I was at Tommy Thompson's election party at a Madison hotel. Hundreds of people...all down in the dumps as the night went on. John Sharpless had just conceeded the congressional race to Tammy Baldwin, and the Florida numbers were horrible.

Unfortunately, we only had ABC and NBC on. There wasn't any cable, so we didn't see Karl Rove on CNN telling us how the "numbers were wrong." I got a phone call from someone who knew I was at the party. He said "ARE YOU WATCHING THIS?!?!" I had no idea what he was talking about. Florida was now too close to call, and the night just got better from there. (It was cool being the only person in the room who knew we were going to win, for just those few minutes before the big nets picked up the story.) The networks later called the race for Bush, and the place went wild.

Anyhow, I left the party at 1:30am CST, went home, and turned on the TV. Bad move. Too close to call again. I stayed up until 5am, took a nap, and then went and took a finance midterm the next morning.

I was in Mexico of all places (I voted for Bush before I went there).

I sat up all night watching conflicting reports with a european friend. It was unreal.

The day before Election Day 2000, my husband & I were at the local GOP headquarters making calls to get out the vote.

We spent a memorable election night with other Florida Freepers at Gonzo's home.

It was a roller coaster of emotions....we were crushed when it was announced about 7PM(before the FL panhandle had closed their polls) that Gore won FL....then elated when that was retracted...then euphoric, offering prayers of thanksgiving, then pouring the champagne when Bush was declared the winner and next President around 2AM!

We waited & waited for Gore to concede.....when it became clear that he refused to do that.....our Fl Chapter President 'seeking the truth' made an amazing prediction which eventually came to pass. He said..."This will go all the way to the Supreme Court."

Within days most of the FL Freepers were on the streets supporting Bush's win and refusing to let Gore steal Florida! It was the most exciting Election Day & Aftermath in my lifetime!

Flagging some other FL Freepers for their memories!
