Sharon wants 1m new Jews for Israel
The Guardian (U.K.) ^ | 11/07/2001 | Emma Brockes and Ewen MacAskill

The Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, threatens to provoke a fresh row with the Palestinians today by warning that he has a plan to bring 1m more Jews to Israel.

Mr Sharon made the controversial remarks in an exclusive interview with the Guardian.

A wave of Jewish immigration on that scale would be ve hemently opposed by the Palestinians, who fear many of the immigrants would be sent to reinforce Jewish settlers living illegally on Palestinian territory in the West Bank and Gaza.

Israeli diplomats last night sought to play down the significance of Mr Sharon's comments at a time when the relationship between Israelis and Palestinians is at its lowest point for decades. Violence yesterday claimed the lives of five Palestinians and one Israeli.

One Israeli diplomat said the remark was a generational one, reflecting the prime minister's pioneering Zionist background.

But Mr Sharon was specific in the interview: "We are not waiting here until [the Palestinian leader, Yasser] Arafat decides to take steps against terror. First of all, we are taking steps against terror: steps that he could have avoided.

"The other thing is that we are building. We are planning now to bring another 1m Jews to Israel."

The population of Israel at present is 6m, of whom 5m are Jewish and the rest mainly Muslim.

Afif Safieh, head of the Palestinian delegation in London, last night condemned the plan: "Sharon believes what he says. It is a dangerous dream, a nightmare. He is a pyromaniac on a powder keg."

He added that such immigrants tended to be the most reactionary, trying to make up for their late arrival as Zionists. It was an especially inflammatory plan, given the millions of Palestinian refugees still waiting to return to their rightful homeland, Mr Safieh said.

Israel has attracted almost 1m immigrants over the last 10 years, mainly from the former Soviet Union. It is difficult to see where Mr Sharon will attract 1m more, though he could squeeze some from the former Soviet Union or try such countries as Argentina, which has 500,000 Jews.

The general tone of Mr Sharon's interview is uncompromising at a time when the US is desperately trying to per suade him to cool the Middle East conflict to avoid undermining the US-led coalition against terrorism.

Mr Sharon insisted that his relationship with the US president, George Bush, had not been strained over the last month and denied he had described him as an appeaser comparable to Neville Chamberlain.

Mr Sharon was unrepentant over the Israeli policy of assassinating Palestinian militants alleged to be plotting bombings and shootings or having been behind such attacks.

Following the assassination of an Israel cabinet minister, Israel re-occupied Palestinian territory, saying it wanted to root out Palestinian militants: "Some of them we managed to arrest, some of them are not any more with us. People don't like the word 'kill'. They were removed from our society."

The Israeli prime minister dashed Palestinian hopes that any renewal of peace negotiations would resume where they left off, with the offer on the table at Taba, Egypt, in January this year from the then Israeli prime minister, Ehud Barak.

Mr Sharon said: "They will never get what he promised them." According to Mr Barak's team, there was a deal that would establish the boundaries for a Palestinian state, allow for the return of some refugees and divide Jerusalem between Israel and the Palestinians.

But Mr Sharon was adamant: "Jerusalem will be forever united and undivided as the capital of the state of Israel."

While the Israel foreign secretary, Shimon Peres, has twice met Mr Arafat in the last week, Mr Sharon has embarked on a strategy of trying to undermine the Palestinian leader. Some of Mr Sharon's circle privately believe that Israel would have a better chance of negotiating a deal with an alternative Palestinian leader.

What is this? Illegally living in the West Bank and Gaza? Since when? Israel OWNS that land, paid for it in BLOOD!!

If Sharon brings in 1 million more Jews, more power to him!! The palestinians can go P@#s up a rope!! Go back to thier homeland Jordan!!

They are lucky that they are allowed to live at all!!

While everyone focuses on the Palestinian's wanting a state, there are more than 25,000,000 (at the very least) Kurds who do not have a nation of their own. Time and again the Kurds have been promised a homeland if they will fight alongside this nation or that nation for this or that nations cause. Only every time ot be merely used and tossed aside. How come the single largest group in the entire world without a nation of its own is never mentioned by the bleeding heart liberals and media?

And please don't mention the socialist PKK in Turkey, because they don't represent the Kurds as a whole by any stretch. Just thought I'd mention that since everyone makes a big stink about the Palestinians.

As for getting more Jews to Israel, it's definitely a provacotive sort of thing to do by Sharon, lets not kid ourselves, but its logical. Especially if you use Talmudic reasoning :)

Isn't it strange that with the Jews immigrating to Israel in droves, the Arabs still grow faster? It is pretty obvious that the borders in Palestine are shoveling Jihad Islamic’s in faster than the Jews can fly in. Arafat complains about Jews coming to Israel, how come Sharon does not complain about Arafat importing hundreds of thousands of Arabs into a state that does not exist, inside Israel's borders? This PC bias inside the media needs to stop. Call a spade a spade. Illegal immigrants yelling Jihad with AK47’s in their hands are the real occupiers inside Israel.

Why if 5/6ths of Israel is Jewish, and the rest is Christian and Moslem, does the World Media want to divide Israel so that Arabs get 3 times as much of it per person as the Jews, and Christians get to be the slaves of the Moslems? Right now it is all the rage to give all of the Christians into Islamic control. Why do we bend over backwards to pay of murderers with other peoples blood and money?

Sharon has been a hero and a tough soldier for nearly 60 years. He is one of the reasons Israel has withstood the constant assaults by those moneyed and oil-soaked Arabs. If you spent that many years fighting the mullahs, you'd be tough as nails too.

To the anti-Israel wingnuts it's controversial every time Sharon opens his mouth. They fear him, they cower before him.

It's too funny that the Palestinians want a state, they are trying to destroy Israel from within, (much like Mohammed Atta did to America), but the wingnuts squeal like stuck pigs when Israel does outreach.

re : Sharon wants 1m new Jews for Israel.

The question is will he get them and will any Jew do, skilled, semi skilled unskilled.

Israel is not in the most enviable of positions, a ongoing low intensity war, surrounded by hostile or semi hostile nations, the whole region bristling with weapons, including special weapons .

How many Jews from America or Europe, those with good nation building skills will answer this call.

Sharon has said this before about the 1m Jews, in fact he mentioned it quite prominently during his visit to Russia. The Guardian falsely claims a scoop.

The Kurds aren't as good terrorists as the Palestinians. If they shot a few Turkish and Iraqi Olympic athletes, then maybe they'll get somewhere.

Also, it helps when your enemies are Jews.

This was mentioned by Sharon a couple of months back. His solution to where the people whould be found was Central and South America. Impoverished and looking for hope, an ideal source of hardened immigrants.
