Ramadan pause 'a gesture to Arabs'

THE United States is likely to order a symbolic pause in the bombing campaign in Afghanistan next week to mark the start of Ramadan, senior Western diplomats said yesterday.
Donald Rumsfeld, the US defence secretary, has rejected any suggestion of halting the bombing campaign, saying that Osama bin Laden and the Taliban must not be given an opportunity to regain their balance.
But under pressure from Arab and other Muslim allies, officials say Washington will make a goodwill gesture - either a brief pause or at least a temporary slowing down of the campaign - to assuage Islamic sentiment.
"Nobody is taking about a 30-day pause. But some days in Ramadan are holier than others, and gestures could be made on those important days," said one senior Western diplomat.
President Musharraf of Pakistan said: "One would certainly wish that the operation does not go on during Ramadan because it will have definite negative effects on the Islamic world."
Voice of America radio invoked Islamic precedents for warfare in the holy month, ranging from a seventh-century victory by the Prophet Mohammed to the Arabs' 1973 war against Israel.

A "gesture" to the Arabs?
(Must British reporters use straight lines like this?!)

As much as I appreciate the Telegraph's conservative English voice, I really hope they dropped the ball on this one.

This idea is absolutely nuts. Whoever suggested it should be removed from any position of authority.
We should bomb the goblins twice as hard on their stupid satanic holiday.

To allow the enemy any chance to regroup and possibly injure American servicemen is inexcusable.

Hopefully we will get our throat-cutters and snipers ready on the ground so we can get the ants when they leave their holes.
If there's going to be a respite in bombing perhaps we can sucker the Taliban into trying to take advantage of it.

I'll give 'em a gesture!

Well said!

I've got a "gesture" for the Arabs and it has nothing to do with Ramadan!

I have a gesture for them.

I think this is actually a chance to regroup for the US under the guise of PC. I read the US is running out of ordinance. A pause might allow some restocking. I sure hope the bomb factories are going full tilt right now.

Cook them Thanksgiving Dinner? Why wait? Let's cook them all now.

There are no rules in war...this is positively stupid. The next thing you know is that we will sit down with them and say..ok we will fight you on this day but not the day after. I think Bin Laden would think that Christmas is the perfect time for more terrorists attacks. I am sick of the Arabs trying to call the shots in OUR war. Forget the grand gesture and give them the gesture they will understand.
