Anthrax fears fade, nuclear fears loom
As fears of widespread anthrax deaths faded this week fears of an imminent nuclear terrorist attack mounted, fed by a chilling warning from US President George W. Bush and reports of missing uranium. But experts were divided over just how possible it would be for a radical like Osama bin Laden to get his hands on nuclear weapons and to use them. "They're seeking chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. Given the means, our enemies would be a threat to every nation and eventually, to civilisation itself," Bush said Tuesday. American experts warned that since the break-up of the Soviet Union and end of the Cold War export controls have become increasingly lax and nuclear scientists have become free to sell their expertise. And Pakistan's arms race with India has left a potentially deadly nuclear arsenal in the hands of a military regime some of whose personnel have close links to bin Laden's Taliban allies. "In the extreme case, should extremists take over the Pakistani government -- control over Pakistan's nuclear explosive materials and weapons could be lots irrestrevably," warns David Albright, head of the Washington-based Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS). This doomsday scenario -- a nuclear armed rogue state -- has long worried US military planners and generated calls for the controversial missile defence shield that Bush has vowed to build. Perhaps even more worrying is the idea, raised in numerous press reports, that Pakistani nuclear weapons could be handed to bin Laden's al-Qaeda network of Islamic radicals for future bomb attacks on US cities or interests abroad. Pakistani analysts dismiss this scenario. "It is accurate to say that there are a number of individuals within the establishment, both civilian and military, who are sympathetic to the Taliban, said defence expert Mohammad Afzal Niazi. "But whether this could ever translate into the sort of action being proposed in these doomsday scenarios is at best extremely doubtful. "It is one one to protest that there in not enough evidence to bomb bin Laden, but quite another to hand over the nuclear keys to al-Qaeda." Other analysts argue that Pakistan's President Pervez Musharraf as purged radical generals from the army and reinforced his grip on power. But even if al-Qaeda can not get access to a complete nuclear bomb, two other threats remain. Terrorists could attack a nuclear installation such as a power station a create an explosion that would release radioactive contamination -- a threat that has seen France, for one, deploy troops and anti-aircraft missiles around its nuclear sites. Otherwise, the gangs could create a so-called "dirty bomb" in which conventional explosives are used along with nuclear materials to spread a cloud of dangerous radioactive debris. Fears that criminals or political extremists could get their hands on nuclear material were increased further on Thursday by a report that Italian police were attempting to trace seven missing bars of enriched uranium. |

The anthrax is not "under control." We have been served notice that they can use any time they want. The purpose is to deter us from taking out Saddam Hussein. As for the nukes, I'm personally doubtful that they have any. I think that the conveniently hypothetical threat of nukes is being used as a proxy for the real threat of anthrax. We are being prepared for the confrontation with Iraq.

IF they pull the triger on a nuke then it is a new ball game and then, we should unleash our entire arsenal.

I should have used "seems". My point is the media is getting bored with anthrax and they want to move to another topic. It's all about ratings for them.

"IF they pull the triger on a nuke then it is a new ball game ..." If anyone detonates a nuke of ANY type in the US, millions of square miles of the Muddle East will soon be solid glass.

The threat of nukes is the real threat and not anthrax.. there's been talk for years about missing fissile material all over europe/soviet union.. if stinkin' rich terrorists can't buy the stolen materials and the expertise to put together some kind of nuclear weapons... nobody can. If the weapons aint in the US now, they could be buried in the sand over there waiting for a US occupation. Either way, bring back star wars and the missile defense shield... take the liberals who got that system abandoned in the first place out back and shot!!

It's not that I disagree with you, but I would have thought killing 5,000 people & releasing Anthrax on our people would have been sufficient reason to do it to. But it hasn't happened yet, just makes me wonder what they consider sufficient reason.

PLEASE BE ADVISED...
The Taliban and their terrorist network DO have "dirty" sub-nuclear devices. A terrorist was caught with one on September 30th. The link is posted here in FR. Do a search and you should find it. They are also known to have smallpox, but it is unconfirmed whether or not they have this weapon on American Soil.
They are known to have attempted to purchase a number of nuclear devices. The reports vary widely. Some reports claim that they have bought "suitcase" nukes from the Soviet Mafia. Other reports state that some of the Generals in Pakistan are highly pro-Taliban and they have access to the nuclear weapon stockpiles. Yet, even other reports, imply an Iraq-designed and developed nuclear weapon.
I am going on record to state that I don't think that they have a nuclear weapon at this time. My reasoning is that they would of used it by now, if they did. However, they remain a very dangerous threat to our Nation.

If they were to use nuclear weapons we have the launch codes ready, we have the strike scenerios ready, and (as was put by the General in "War Games") we have the missles in the bullpen. All those ragheads know this, and by this time they know we won't blink an eye going to launch mode. I think what they are doing is purposefully staying away from nucs (even if they were to have any) so that the wrath of God doesn't rain down upon them and they can still chip away at us like a yipping little dog. Another reason is that the neighboring ragheads don't want the same thing to happen to them. The only way to deal with these idiots is with naked, brute, unrelenting force! Hell, even some of the lefties are saying, "Nuc 'em!". They can't be real pleased about that.
No, one nuclear detonation on this hallowed ground we call home would reap a nuclear holocost of unthinkable proportions for our raghead buddies, and they know it all too well. As for the anthrax, and other potential? We find their production points in Iraq and we bomb the hell out of them. No incindiary devices! Just bomb and let the dust spread. Use their own weapon against them. When CNN starts reporting the mass infections among the Iraqi people then we'll know we hit the right places! Bada bing, bada bang, bada boom, either way the ragheads loose.
Now, for all you people that think I'm an evil, murdering dude......think of the pictures of 9/11...think of the fear and anger you felt, then multiply that by 100....that's what would happen if WE loose. I'll be long dead if that happens, but there will be alot of ragheads that I'll take with me!

OR, replace it with a new one!

Now that anthrax seems under control, the media is searching for the next "big" story. I'm sure that's true, but the nuclear one has ALWAYS been a big story IMO. Personally, I've been concerned about nukes in the hands of terrorists for years.
There are number of different kinds of genuine major threats. The nuke threats (in their various varieties), smallpox, coordinated multiple truck bomb attacks on strategic targets, and, yes, anthrax top my list.

If they have them I feel we will see them used during Ramadan, this will give them power at a religious time for Muslims around the world.

Mostly I'm worried about mass underwear theft.
To: HELLRAISER II
That's a good point... hadn't really considered that scenario. That falls in with my theory that the terrorists are building religious support and justification for their use of nuclear weapons against the west and west forces. "we had to use the nukes... the americans were attacking us during ramadan.. allah demanded it". I'm hoping the weapons aren't in the united states.. which i'm not sure they are.. but I think they could also be used against a US ground invasion in pakistan, which is a more plausible scenario if they have them. These chumps don't have a problem pissing all over their holy land, as demonstrated by saddam lighting off all the oil well fires.
To: vannrox
Funny that you should say that. My conclusion is that terrorist would use their nuclear arsenal last after they have depleted their "conventioal" weapons (suicide bombers, hijackers, etc.). Why use your best weapons first. Espescially since they would be just as effective later. We discussed this issue here:
Why Terrorists Would Use Nuclear Weapons Last
