URBANK, Calif., Nov. 8 (Bloomberg News) The />Walt Disney Company (news/quote) said today that its fiscal fourth- quarter profit fell 82 percent because it sold less advertising on its ABC television network and fewer people visited its theme parks.
Net income fell to $63 million, or 3 cents a share, compared with $348 million, or 16 cents a share, in the period a year earlier. Revenue declined 4.8 percent, to $5.81 billion from $6.11 billion. Disney's earnings were cut $126 million, or 3 cents a share, by revamping and impairment costs. Excluding those costs, it would have earned 6 cents a share, a penny less than analysts' expectations, according to Thomson Financial/First Call. The Sept. 11 attacks deepened a decline in ABC's ad sales when the network aired nonstop commercial- free news coverage for several days. Low audience ratings also hurt ad sales. Attendance at Walt Disney World in Florida fell as thousands of people canceled travel plans. "Clearly, a terrible ad market multiplied by poor ratings doesn't give anybody reason to expect anything but declining operating income" at Disney's TV networks, Jeffrey Logsdon, a media analyst at Gerard, Klauer, Mattison & Company, said before the earnings were released. In the current quarter, Disney said, it expects operating income to be less than half of what it was in the period a year earlier, with the TV network and theme parks leading the decline. Lower retail sales may also cut earnings at Disney's consumer-products division. "Ad softness should continue well into 2002, and there are no visible signs of recovery," Robert A. Iger, Disney's president, said in a conference call with analysts. Disney, based in Burbank, said it expected operating income to decline 10 percent to 15 percent in the last three quarters of fiscal 2002. ABC's prime-time program schedule will change soon, Disney executives said, in hopes of increasing ratings. ABC "is our most important point of focus right now," said Michael D. Eisner, the chief executive. "The fact is we need to improve upon our recent development in this area." Before the results were announced, shares of Disney closed at $18.84, up 38 cents. They fell to $18.50 after hours. |

Good, I hope they go bankrupt. The latest Pixar movie Monsters, Inc. sounds like a great film, but I won't see it since Disney is the distributor. I can wait for Harry Potter and The Fellowship of The Ring for my fantasy entertainment.

I can appreciate what your saying about Disney, however, I live in Orlando and unfortunately --Disney has to survive to keep Orlando booming. Atleast until other industry can possible take over what they bring to the market place (good or bad) -- I want Disney to get better and perhaps rethink their market strategy, cut back but survive. For my many neighbors that work at Disney. -T

After working for the company in the consumer products division I predicted this 2 years ago. They were hiring advertising closet lesbians and fashion gay men. They didn't know the characters names, didn't know the characters talked, never saw the cartoons, then began to turn the business into a designer jean co. They also began strong arming and extorting their licencees, causing some mom and pop operations who mortgaged their houses to lose everything.

"...there are no visible signs of recovery..."Well, tray, Disneyworld in Orlando, will now reap the harvest of the seeds that it has sown.
I live in Lakeland, tray, and Disney, as delightful as it once was, is just a homosexual-sewer now.
It really is sad. ....FRegards

How did they extort these poor people? I hope some of them sued.

Homosexuals do not visit in families of 4-7, do they; nor do they spend nesrly the same amount of money. Disney forgot, or doesn't care, about their target market.

Disney is the evil empire and I for one don't feel sorry for mikey eisner and company. $50-60 bucks to go into their little kingdom. $6 bucks for a bad hot dog or hamburger and still these bozos can't make money? What happened to good old fashoned family entertainment? when was the last time they made a good movie you could go to as a family? You watch anything on the disney channel and it is crap. Disney down? So what.

Their recent movies have gotten worse and worse. Dreamworks and Nickelodeon are kicking their rear.

Orlando has much much more to offer than Disney. I intend to go to Orlando this spring and have no intentions of setting foot in a Disney park.
Ten years ago, this news would have bothered me. Now I feel like its what's deserved.

Maybe Disney will reconsider gay days at their parks. Obviously there are a lot of families who are scared to shell out the big bucks to take their kids to the park only to find that it's Open Homosexuality Day at Disney.
And as for ABC... like CNN, they are so married to their agenda, they're willing to flush themselves down the toilet just to get their propaganda out.
To: kattracks
Here in Orange County, CA, they haven't been able to give away tickets to their latest theme park, California Adventure. Downtown Disney is always packed though.

Perhaps THIS is why ABC was the only regular network to carry the President's speech last night. Peter Jennings has to be feeling the heat from Eisner. Heheheheh.
