Utah beer's flippant ads land brewmaster in the suds

PARK CITY, Utah - Polygamy Porter tastes good. The question in this Mormon-dominated state is whether the billboard advertising for the beer is in good taste.

Greg Schirf, the brewmaster and owner of Wasatch Beer, insists the slogans, "Why have just one?" and "Take some home for the wives," are in good fun.

But the Utah Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission and two local billboard companies disagree.

The state agency has toyed with the idea of banning advertising that pokes fun at religion while the billboard companies have refused to rent Schirf space on their signs.

"Take some home for the wives"

LMAO

I'd buy some just for the appreciation of their humor.

Blended in the style of the great European Pilsners, St. Provo Girl perks your senses and the brings you back for more. It is an uncommon flavor brewed in an unlikely place. As the St. Provo Girl reminds us, "I may be from Provo but I'm no saint."

Here's a good label for you:

Captain Bastard's Oatmeal stout is strong in character, thick in texture and finishes with a roasted, bitter bite at the end. If outlaw pirates could have tasted this Oatmeal Stout, they might have made it all the way to Utah to plunder the brewery!

Government at all levels, including the liquor board, is dominated by church members.

That should probably read, "Government at all levels, especially the liquor board, is dominated by church members."

Oh, I think it would be a good thing for some of these church members to go back and read some of Brother Brigham's words regarding tolerance of others' beliefs (or lack thereof). And a class on first amendment principles, like, oh, say, freedom of speech, might not hurt either.

Great labels. Thanks for finding and linking 'em.

You'll find the originals for Polygamy Porter here.

That Schirf would poke fun at Utah's embarrassing history has become a brew-haha that is taking on Olympic proportions.

And that's the crux of the matter: Utah LDS residents truly are embarrassed by their history. They're going to have to learn to be able to distinguish between the practices of their polygamist ancestors and the goofballs who are out there giving polygamy a bad name today.

If anyone should be upset, it's the polygamists who are apparently the target market for this guys suds. But it would seem that they've got better senses of humor than the mainline LDS Church members.

I would imagine that given Utah's restrictive alcohol content laws, the rest of the world would probably laugh at the idea of referring to these beverages as beer, anyways.

"The entire ad is offensive."

Reagan Outdoor Advertising decided to go moralistic in Utah. Meanwhile in Nevada, they are still posting billboards that advertise titty bars and brothels.

Or drive them to drink, perhaps. Oh, wait, that's what started all this.

I wonder if we can import this to Texas?!! I'm sure a lot of Baptist's will buy it, if only to spite the Mormon's. (Not that they would actually drink it!)
