U.S. President George W. Bush spoke to the General Assembly of the United Nations in New York City on Saturday morning. The following is a text of his address.

"Mr. Secretary-General, Mr. President, distinguished delegates and ladies and gentlemen, we meet in a hall devoted to peace, in a city scarred by violence, in a nation awakened to danger, in a world uniting for a long struggle.

""The terrorists call their cause holy, yet they fund it with drug dealing. They encourage murder and suicide in the name of a great faith that forbids both. They dare to ask God's blessing as they set out to kill innocent men, women and children. But the God of Isaac and Ismail would never answer such a prayer.

"And a murderer is not a martyr, he is just a murderer. Time is passing. Yet, for the United States of America, there will be no forgetting September the 11th. We will remember every rescuer who died in honor. We will remember every family that lives in grief. We will remember the fire and ash, the last phone calls, the funerals of the children.

"And the people of my country will remember those who have plotted against us. We are learning their names. We are coming to know their faces. There is no corner of the earth distant or dark enough to protect them. However long it takes, their hour of justice will come.

"Every nation has a stake in this cause. As we meet, the terrorists are planning more murder, perhaps in my country or perhaps in yours. They kill because they aspire to dominate. They seek to overthrow governments and destabilize entire regions."

Thank you for posting this. I was hoping for the complete text.

Outstanding speech!

The US has 'changed' since 9/11.
Perhaps the UN also will once they absorb the impact and portent of George Bush's phenomenal address....

The terrorists have been put on alert wherever they reside...none of their 'host ' nations borders are sacrosanct following the President's epic presentation...

"We are confident, too, that history has an author who fills time and eternity with his purpose.

I got chills when he spoke these words. Surely our President is a man of faith, vision, truth and humility.

You're more than welcome. I was watching for the text so I could print & save it.

I get so tired of the line "Bush has GROWN so much since 9/11." He's simply become more comfortable speaking when he knows the eyes of the world are upon him!

Couldn't agree more. GWB put more than one nation on notice and used the UN as his forum.

I would have been more impressed if he told them they were leaving New York and the US was leaving their idiot organization.

Yep. Bush doesn't realize that the UN IS the problem. They condemn the U.S. routinely for not giving them money so they can give to third-world crapholes around the world....

The UN is full of hypocrisy. These are millionaire foreign elitists who suck off the tit of U.S. taxpayers so they can pretend they're solving the world's problems.

It's a great speech, but there is no justification for the U.S. being involved in the U.N. at all.

Great speech! Hate to find fault with it, but there's one thing I'm uneasy about. Whatever one thinks of Palestinian statehood, this is absolutely the wrong time for the President of the United States to push for it. If the Palestinians get statehood out of this, Osama will be a hero forever. What an appalling precedent; what a sad lesson for future generations.

Magnolia, thank you for posting this magnificent speech. I guess I'll try to dwell on all that's good and beautiful in it.

And the world needs its principled leadership. It undermines the credibility of this great institution, for example, when the Commission on Human Rights offers seats to the world's most persistent violators of human rights.

It seems he put the UN on notice as well.

Plain words spoken eloquently and honestly. There is absolutely no room to misunderstand that THIS President is a real leader, a man of action, and an admirable human being. I'm so proud of him.

What a grabber opening line! Fantastic speechwriters.

When I saw Kofi Anan up there spewing his nonsense all I could think about was Rwanda. How did this man get the Nobel Peace Prize. What a terrible choice. But then I guess black lives lost mean nothing.

"I would have been more impressed if he told them they were leaving New York and the US was leaving their idiot organization."

I really believe that there is much more going on here that isn't readily obvious. There is every possibility that Dubya may actually attempt to co-opt the UN. In the same way he has generally conducted his political machinations. By seeming to acquiese to opposition demands and still gettting the results he wants through dogged determination. He is a very crafty politician and is always underestimated. The UN may turn out to be a bunch of useful idiots before all is said and done.

I may be wrong but, there seems to be a pattern developing with this President. Talk about interesting times, eh?!?

If Kofi Anan comprehends and in turn disseminates to other member nations the full impact and thrust of Dubya's message as one to be heeded , he can have any peace prize he wants...

On the contrary he said the UN can't devote all it's effort to terrorism, rather we should be concerned with the poor, the hungry, the diseased....in other words...platitudes meaning nothing. Speech probably written by slick willie.

You, sir, are brilliant! That would be true to his character. Thanks for the good thought - you made my day with your optomistic projection.
