How about strapping on some solid fuel boosters, towing the thing (or more likely it's successor) up to about 40K, firing off the boosters, and *then* lighting off the engines!
anybody with any background in this want to comment?

Their plans are to build it's bigger brother which can get to the edge of space. They'll be able to do this without boosters. Their next design may be aiming for Low-Earth-Orbit which they might employ boosters or an airplane tow to 40k. Stay tuned, they may eventually do it.
