[history]
A Johnstown couple's shopping trip to Westmoreland Mall Monday night nearly took a tragic turn when their 8-year-old son became trapped in an airtight gun safe.
Joshua Mulvehill emerged unharmed from the approximately 4-foot-high safe when crowbar-wielding rescuers pried open the door 10 minutes after the boy's big brother unintentionally locked him inside it.

"People shouldn't have this kind of access," said a shaken Stephanie Mulvehill. "They should be kept locked."
People shouldn't raise kids this stupid.

I'm amazed that the store did not have the correct combination for that safe.

MORE PROOF GUNS SHOULD BE BANNED!!
Actually, more proof that these deadly assault safes should be banned! *grin*

People shouldn't raise kids this stupid.ALL kids are stupid.
That's why parents have to keep an eye on 'em.

sales staff tried unsuccessfully to use a combination to open the safe...After Sears tried the combination 15 times, I said the heck with it
a Sears employee tried instead to call Westmoreland County 911 using a store phone. When the call wouldn't go through
I see Sears hasnt changed much since I was last there about 15 years ago.

I am waiting for the teary-eyed person to come in here an state facts about how over 2.4 kids have been trapped in a safe in the last 10 years. A new law should be passed.
The correct combination must be typed on the outside of any safe. Hummmmmm

"They pried open the safe's door within minutes..."Huh. Great safe.
To: Willie Green
If the parents actually watched their kids they wouldn't have to blame the store for causing the kids pranks.

True enough, but Adam Mulvihill is a stupid butthead among stupid buttheads. As the general in "Good Morning, Vietnam" would have put it, he's not crazy. He's mean.

I'm amazed that the store did not have the correct combination for that safe. The combination (along with the owner's manual, warranty registration card, etc.) was probably in an envelope inside the safe.

The old "It's not their fault" syndrome. These little boys are going to be trouble.

They need to put a padlock on that safe to keep kids out. Better yet every safe manufacturer should provide free safe locks to every purchaser. Or maybe all law enforcement agencies could provoide safe locks for all safes, free for the asking.

Any safe you can open with a crowbar in a few minutes shouldn't be called a safe.
To: Willie Green
companies that manufacture safes should be required to install devices that allow a person trapped inside to free himself Let's see. A boy is in a completely dark gun safe that he's just been pushed into seconds before the door is shut. He's afraid, panicking even. He's unfamiliar with the safe and you expect him to be able to find and then operate a knob/lever/whatever. Uh, huh. Federal regulations are definitely a good idea....

James Mulvehill thanked those who pitched in to help force the safe open, but both he and his wife were critical of Sears."People shouldn't have this kind of access," said a shaken Stephanie Mulvehill. "They should be kept locked."
No wonder the kids acted like idiots, the parents are idiots.
Not much of a safe.
