Muslim students will be permitted to pray in school during the holy period of Ramadan - with restrictions, Schools Chancellor Harold Levy's office said.
The prayers can't disrupt classes or impinge on the rights of other students, said Levy spokeswoman Margie Feinberg.

So the question is, WHERE"s the A.C.L.U. now? Oh never mind I know, they're busy gearing up to protest local nativity scenes for the Christmas holiday

OK looks like Christians have a right to pray since the Moslems get to.

"The prayers can't disrupt classes or impinge on the rights of other students, said Levy spokeswoman Margie Feinberg."
As an agnostic I ask the question: Why, when the prayers are to a Christian god, do prayers always seem to impinge on the rights of other students even before they are performed?

I totally agree , but you and I both know this isn't how it'll work. I remember a few years ago in these same NYC schools a teacher being fired for telling a student that her faith in Christ sustains her in troubled times. Right away the ACLU jumped in and said she was promoting religion and was being insensitive because the kid happened to be Jewish. I have no problem letting muslems pray, but then it must be accross the board, and liberals (and make no mistake, NYC schools are a bastion of liberalism) are NEVER evenhanded when it comes to this issue

Christian parents must now instruct thier kids to drop to thier knees during shool hours to pray, preferably in groups.
Now is the window of opportunity to retake our schools.

Unfortunately, it seems like you must be disruptive in order to make any progress. In the past, Christians and conservatives have lost ground because they wanted to be accommadating.

Does this mean the Christians can openly pray and give thanks before meals, and the Jewish children pray, say the Sh'mah and give thanks before and after meals? Or is it only freedon of religion for those whose extremist elements murder innocents in vasts numbers, while complaining of religious intolerance.

they are only opposed to the public practice of Christianity and Conservative Judaism which opposes their political, social and moral agenda. It's pure power politics in its rawest form.

How true I am willing to bet if Indians in some southwestern state school wanted to do some religious celebration the schools would fall all over themselves to accommodate them

This went on last year too.
 If it's Christian it's hate.
 If it's a minority, it's culture.

I just contacted via email the ACLU asking that they respond back to me with an answer to this situation.
Can't wait to see what is said.

Hey, they're fasting. They can gather during their lunch hour and pray... and later in the day? That sounds a lot like after school. Other than that, more power to them.

In the interest of appeasing the Muslims, we must allow their prayers and refuse to let Christians pray. Ain't the war on terrorism great?

    "

To: YankeeReb
Yes I agree but we must take a stand and force them to recognize our rights are just as important as theirs.

I don't know. But if I were a Chritian in school, I'd be asking for all sorts of special accomodations during Lent this year. "But my Lenten pomise is to pray 5 times a day......and always during Algebra. :)
