DRUDGE RESORTING TO ANNOYING POP-UP ADS
Drudge Report ^

Matt Drudge is resorting to annoying POP-UP ADS to make a buck! Those annoying pop-ups from "doubleclick" and "Ad Browser" which get downloaded in the form of cookies and populate you browser with "doublclick" pop up ads. This really sucks. I HATE THEM! And it's really motivating me to stop visiting the Drudge Report. If you want to check it out, clean out your temporary internet file folder and then head on over to Drudge's page. Then go back to your TFF and you'll see the cookies there ready to spring and annoy you to no end. That really sucks, Matt.

The ads are controlled by the group that handles his ads. Drudge probably has no idea what is in the banners.

I was just there - no annoying pop-up ads.
I basically surf back and forth from Drudge and FR all day...pop-ups would definitely suck!
To: MattGarrett
Ditto! Just there..no pop ups!

WARNING: DO NOT SHOOT THE DUCKS!!!
If you don't click the add (shoot the ducks), you won't get the pop-ups!

Try
this to eliminate all popups and all banner ads. It's FREE and it works great.
To: MattGarrett
You can block them with IE 6.

Yep. Started noticing that last week or so. That's OK. We use our Packeteer PacketShaper to re-direct all pop-under and pop-over ads to a blank page on one of our utility servers. Helps lessen Internet traffic. It's great knowing companies that resort to pop-under and pop-over ads are not able to get their message across, at least on this small network...

I don't get any pop-ups either but that's probably because I did an "opt-out" with Doubleclick some time ago. There are ways to keep pop-up ads away from your desktop, sometime I'm going to do a post with all the ways to prevent them.

World recession, Kamakazi killers, anthrax mailers, Peter Jennings...I can survive, but pop-ups on Drudge...say it an't so!

(Without dealing with the particulars of drudge...)
If you don't like cookies, check out guidescope over at http://www.guidescope.com.
Guidescope runs as a proxy server on your own machine, blocking cookies and banner ads. On a 56K modem the result is that you surf not only with privacy, but with greater speed as well since you don't waste bandwidth downloading ads. You can selectively allow cookies in from sites that you want to, in order to increase functionality. And, unlike turning off cookies on IE, guidescope lets you selectively deny the cookies, and it remembers which ones you want to allow.
I still haven't decided if guidescope slows me down on my new cable modem or not, yet.

Question: Is it possible for pop-up ads to have a latency period before they actually "pop". Twice in the last month while I have been on Free Republic a pop-up has appeared. I thought it very strange but did not make a note of what I had been doing, though I had probably been to Drudge, Yahoo, Google or some other site fairly shortly before it happened. I believe something similar has happened once or twice while I was on a site other than Free Republic, with a pop-up appearing when it seemed very unlikely. I do have a pop-up suppressor on my computer - could it just be delaying rather than preventing?

I tried Pop-up Killer and it worked great, but I won't give you the URL because it started crashing my computer and had to be uninstalled. Bump for information

Wow, thanks. I've been pulling my hair out over those nasty pop ups on various sites. I hate them but couldn't find anyone who knew how to stamp them out! Thanks a bunch! ;^D

Why would anyone go to Drudge when we have FR? I used to be a regular visitor there until I noticed that everything, of any importance, he posts, has already been kicked around on FR for a few hours. If not, it's posted here as soon as it shows up there. So what's the point of going there at all?
To: MattGarrett
If you don't like the pop-ups, don't visit Drudge's site. That's the beauty of our economic system.

I hate pop-up ads. I am about to start a new website, and pop-up ads will never be there...but let me add this:
The reason pop up ads exsist is because not enough people click on the banner ads at thetop of the page. Pop-up ads have a slightly better "clicktrhu" rate then traditional banner ads. Wanna slow the growth of po-ups? Click a banner. If you want to buy something online and you know that a favorite website of yours carries a banner for it...buy it through there.
Because the internet (unlike TV, print and radio) gives the advertiser real time stats on an ad campaign, advertisers have become pretty demanding about how they spend their ad dollars. They wait months to see if a tv ad campaign is working...they can figure it out on the internet in a couple of days.
Click a banner, save a website...keep the economy moving.

I was also just at Matt's site -- no pop-ups.
Was this a one-off?
