[history]
Turkey has committed to fighting on America's side in the war against terrorism, and it now appears Turkey will take the lead in contributing troops to a peacekeeping force in Afghanistan.
From no other Muslim country could we ask so much. As we seek to stabilize the shaky Muslim wing of the alliance against terror, Turkey must be seen to earn real dividends from its allegiance.

I just want to thank you for your body of posts. We have not communicated before. Your contribution overall IMO has been positive. What is your solution to Cyprus by the way?

Thanks. I'm sick of letting the competition rip on me.
What is your solution to Cyprus by the way?
I know that there are people who want peace, and others that don't. I believe that the treaty signed by the UK, Turkey, and Greece, which guarantees the sovereignty of Cyprus should be respected, and that according to this treaty, Cyprus should not be admitted to any block which does not include both Turkey and Greece. Furthermore, the final political structure on the island should consist of two loosely federated states, sothat Greek and Turkish Cypriots each have their own set of democratic institutions.

I remember about 10 years back there was a police officer educational exchange program between the USA and Turkey. Do you remember that?

Among all Moslem dominated countries, only Turkey, under the seemingly miraculous leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, has made the successful transition from a religious state to a secular state, a Republic! We ought depend heavily on the Turks to institute changes in Afghanistan, if the populace will try to change in ways that will mean survival of their people. If theAfghanis will not embrace secularization of their government, I fear the strife will only fester. Turkey did not give up Islam, they just transitioned culture and government to a secular model while retaining/preserving their priceless history and abiding Islamic faith. Perhaps they can teach their Islamic brothers and sisters to do likewise. Perhaps.

I'm not sure what the "block" bit means, but your suggestion about Cyprus I suspect is the only practicable one. I agree with it, although my knowledge of the ins and outs on this issue is limited.
You don't really know what flames are all about unless you had participated taking the minority position (there were really only two of us over the long haul, and then later three) on the Balkans threads. :)

miraculous leadership of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, If there is a heaven, the main reason Ataturk is not there I suspect has to do with the Armenians. But I prefer not to fight past battles. We must move on with a positive and practicable attitude with a generation not alive then. Otherwise this planet would be perpetually at war.

I remember about 10 years back there was a police officer educational exchange program between the USA and Turkey. Do you remember that? No, I missed that one. I travelled to Moscow and to Aktau, Kazahkstan with about 40 Dallas/Fort Worth area police officers for 10 days. Got to tour a few facilities and meet some gorgeous Kazahk women. I expected Kazahkstan to be completely dry. Boy, was I surprised.
I would love to have participated in the Turkish exchange program. Hope I'll have an opportunity to visit in the future.
