Bleeth spent the night in jail here after patrol officers found what they suspected was cocaine in her purse during their investigation of a car accident on Sept. 12. Police said Friday's charges also stem from a subsequent search of Bleeth's hotel room.W.T.F?!?!? How do you get from investigating a car accident to searching a persons residence?!?!
Murrica sure is a different place than I grew up in.

They probably asked the hotel manager for permission to enter the room.

What this article leaves out is that the cocaine in Bleeth's possession was in a liquid solution and she also had a syringe still full of cocaine residue. She wasn't snorting or smoking her coke, she was firing it up. Ahh, the wonderful life of a Hollywood actress.

They probably asked the hotel manager for permission to enter the room. It's questionable whether the owner had the right to grant that permission, since you are entitled to 'quiet enjoyment' of the premises you rent, and you inherit various rights normally given to landowners. It may be a little different for hotels -- lots of laws are different for hotels and the like. From higher taxes to extremely quick evictions to the right to seize property (in some states) to guarentee payment, there is a larger range of normally unconstitutional actions that hoteliers may perform. But I still think entry is barred (provided payment is current) as it would be in an apartment, unless a warrant is obtained.
My main problem with this is, is why would a car accident investigation be cause to search a residence? The one simply does not follow the other, to my mind. Or are all crimes committed in public now considered to be probable cause to search all areas frequented, visited, or resided in by the suspect? I mean, if so, doesn't that render the 4th amendment dead?
Uh..... I mean, MORE dead?

They probably got "probable cause" based on something in her purse. If she acted as if she were under the influence of cocaine at the accident scene, then there is probable cause for searching the purse. If they found anything on that search that pointed to a larger stash of the stuff (like, if she wrote herself a note: "MUST REMEMBER TO PACK UP NOSE CANDY I LEFT IN HOTEL ROOM"), then the cops could get a search warrant for the hotel room.
