All of Madison Avenue's admen and all of Tinsel Town's newly minted patriots cannot put a pro-American Humpty Dumpty back together again.
Hollywood's no-enemies-on-the-left and self-hating outpourings over the years - from "Heart in Atlantis" and "Three Days of the Condor" to "JFK" and "American Beauty" - played a large role in shaping anti-American perceptions around the world.
Movies that depicted the CIA, NSA and FBI as staffed with ruthless maniacs who were out to "terminate with maximum prejudice (TWMP)", or at the very least teach local sadists how to slow torture, anyone who dared speak the truth about America's fascist leaders were widely believed to be an accurate portrayal of how America came to be the world's only superpower (e.g., "Enemy of the State").
Average American families, as seen by Tinsel Town, ranged from a psychotic caricature of the late Dr. Herman Kahn, later replaced in popular mythology, by Dr. Henry Kissinger, as Dr. Strangelove, to a retired Marine colonel as a closet gay who collects Nazi memorabilia, and whose drug-peddling son spends his time peering through a telescope at a neighbor's daughter who likes to be watched shedding her clothes.
Pro. Jack Shaheen, in his book "Reel Bad Arabs: How Hollywood Vilifies a People," documents how the stereotype image of bad Arabs ("Rules of Engagement," "The Siege," and "True Lies") has produced a mirror image of despicable characters on both sides of the cultural divide.
These productions seemed designed to widen, rather than narrow, the gap between two civilizations. Attempts to sell America to the Arab world have been dismal flops - with good reason.
Shaheen demonstrates how Hollywood has shown its greatest contempt for Arab culture, and how the majority of some 900 films researched, degrades and dehumanizes the average Arab, robed and turbaned, sinister and dangerous, engaged mainly in blowing up buildings and hijacking planes.
Two weeks before 9/11, Egypt's Al Akhbar newspaper wrote that the Statue of Liberty in New York "must be destroyed." The degree of hatred for what is seen as America's anti-Muslim, pro-Israeli cultural values cannot be overestimated. And since 9/11, Hollywood's only sensible move was to yank "Black Hawk Down" on the incident that led to 18 American KIA in Somalia and to Bill Clinton's decision to fold America's tent in the Horn of Africa and sneak home.
World War II's pro-war effort movies were a piece of cake compared to what the White House is now asking Hollywood to project. Hitler and Tojo were the arch villains. Not so Osama bin Laden, a hero to countless millions of Arabs and Muslims.
These are the people who see bin Laden as Che Guevara-cum-Robin Hood-cum-The Avenger-type character who is trying to bring an uncaring superpower to heel, and correct perceived injustices and inequities between rich and poor nations.
The America others love to hate or despise was a creation of Hollywood's liberal screenwriters and superstars. But the mere suggestion that they were in any way responsible for how foreign Muslims look at the U.S. is dismissed as unreconstructed McCarthyism.
Hollywood moguls rejected the script of a movie based on a best-selling novel co-authored in 1980 by Robert Moss and this writer as anti-communist propaganda.
Directors who wished to take on the assignment of turning a novel that sold three million copies in 19 languages into a movie received blunt warnings from the powers that be: you will be blackballed and your career ruined.
Since the end of the Cold War, KGB and Stasi files proved conclusively that the novel "The Spike" had understated the problem of Soviet disinformation themes eagerly embraced in the western media.
Whether Motion Picture Association czar Jack Valenti can get the silver screen's honchos to sample the patriotic crow on the White House chef's menu remains to be seen.
Karl Rove, senior adviser to President Bush, says he heard some 20 specific ideas at last week's meeting of about 50 top executives from Hollywood's movie studios, television networks, cinema operators and labor unions.
No one was willing to accept the blame for grotesquely distorted impressions of America abroad. Yet Hollywood comes up in almost every conversation with a Muslim, from intellectuals to small businessmen. In Pakistan, Muslim clerics and army generals says that the American values conveyed by Hollywood have contributed mightily to the rise of Islamist extremism.
Both sides in Rove's White House meeting carefully sidestepped content issues. In fact, Jack Valenti declared, "Content was off the table." Rove said that the people who compare his efforts at cooperation between Hollywood and Washington to what occurred during World War II, don't know what they're talking about.
"Contrary to the expectations that most people have, the government did not direct the movie industry during World War II," Rove added. "The industry sort of set its own course, and that is certainly what we would encourage at this point."
Again, the core issue was avoided. In World War II, the U.S. was allied with the Soviet Union against the fascist coalition and Hollywood adopted patriotic themes with enthusiasm and alacrity.
U.S. B-52s carpet bombing a backward Muslim country, albeit ruled by Islamist crazies and al-Qaeda terrorists, does not tug at the same, seldom used patriotic strings. It's hard to picture movie stars taking a stand against anti-bombing demonstrators. That's more their kind of rumble.
It's even harder to see them disagreeing with Bill Clinton who said last week that 9/11 was, in effect, the sequel to America's history of genocide against native Americans and black slavery. Clinton sounded like an echo of Islamist extremists who would have added to his list "America's atomic terrorism against Hiroshima and Nagasaki."
NPR's Foreign Editor Loren Jenkins, reflecting the anti-military mindset of liberal media and liberal filmmaking, said he would out a team of reporters into South Asia with instructions to "smoke out," not Osama bin Laden, but American troops to reveal their locations.
In Jenkins' judgment, bin Laden deserves to be heard just as much as Pentagon briefers. Borderless media for this new school of journalism plays a similar role to "Medecins Sans Frontieres," or borderless doctors. Patriotism has no place in their ranks.
Rove did feel, however, that Hollywood could help make clear that the war is against terrorism, not Islam. But how does Hollywood explain that militant Islam is at war with the U.S.? And why do Muslim radicals have such a perverted view of the world's freest nation?
Valenti said the meeting produced "a seamless web of unity. It was really quite affectionate to behold." That's what usually happens when real issues are swept under the proverbial Oriental rug.
The most effective way to tackle misperceptions about America is to lean on friendly Arab and Muslim leaders to correct the lies that are published or broadcast by their media with tedious regularity.
It's high time these leaders speak out loud and clear in America's defense and remind their people that Washington's last three military interventions were on behalf of Muslim people.
Instead of apologizing to the Saudis for what U.S. media have been writing and saying about Saudi funding of Wahhabi Koranic schools that teach kids to hate America all over the Muslim world, the Bush Administration should take the House of Saud to the diplomatic woodshed.
The friendly neighborhood gas station has been using a large part of its income from the western world to appease its anti-American Islamist clergy. If Pakistan falls to Islamist forces, the well-funded, anti-American Wahhabi religious machine will be largely to blame.
In its Nov. issue, London's prestigious FOREIGN REPORT documents how Saudi "religious brainwashing" has led to terrorist attacks against the U.S. "The House of Saud," it said, "should have understood a long time ago that its policy of encouraging anti-western religious sentiments in an effort to preserve the monarchy was bound to turn against the country's own rulers."
The House of Saud should also be told what prominent non-royal Saudis have been saying privately on recent visits to Washington. One Saudi graduate of the Harvard Business School, who manages one of the royal prince's businesses, confided, "Outside of the 30,000-strong royal family, Osama bin Laden is the most popular figure in the kingdom."
Then he added ominously, "America should get ready for 20 years of Saudi hostility." For that, too, the royals can thank their extremist Wahhabi clergy.
A geopolitical train wreck is in the making. American apologies and Saudi denials can no longer conceal the truth.

Our domestic culture hating terrorists?
By Hollywood he probably means the producers and screenwrites. Wonder what kind of an ethnic group they belong to. Californian?
Simultaneously (1962 - 1980) the Middle East events unfolded. The "Aaarabs" seemed either silly or incompetent - most assuredly psychotic - acting absolutely without foundation against the poor Jews who had been so abominably the object of bigotry, hatred - genocide.
I cheered for Israel every time she kicked Aaaarab ass. I cheered Sharon. Sabra and Shatilla was the watershed event, though I did not know it at the time . . .
It has taken me thirty years to explore the era of Jabotinsky.
That was Lebanese Christian operation.
How old are you? By any chance were you alive and paying attention at the time? Did you watch any of the "McNeal/ Lehrer News Hour (PBS) talking heads anguish over the question of whether or not the IDF's assistance for two nights running - the IDF's illumination of the night skies with parachute flares (U.S. supplied) had cost Israel her unquestioned moral authority? "Has Israel lost the moral high ground in the Middle East?"
At the time they seemed like silly questions.
I don't care what the left wing spin was, it was carried out by Lebanese Christians in retaliation for atrocities the Muslims had carried out against them.
And I don't believe you ever cheered it. Nobody cheered it.
It took me thirty years to question my sympathy for Israel. The question now is, "How does the world manage the truth after decades of editing the news to create an extreme bias in favor of one side and hostile to the other. How do we restore the balance?( (Hebrew: National Military Organization), )byname Etzel, Jewish right-wing underground movement in Palestine, founded in 1931. At first supported by many non-Socialist Zionist parties, in opposition to the Haganah, it became in 1936 an instrument of the Revisionist Party, an extreme nationalist group that had seceded from the World Zionist Organization and whose policies called for the use of force, if necessary, to establish a Jewish state on both sides of the Jordan.
Irgun committed acts of terrorism and assassination against the British, whom it regarded as illegal occupiers, and it was also violently anti-Arab. Irgun also participated in the organization of illegal immigration into Palestine after the publication of the British White Paper on Palestine (1939), which severely limited immigration. Irgun's violent activities led to execution of many of its members by the British; in retaliation, Irgun executed British army hostages.
Irgun's members were extremely disciplined and daring, and their actions included the capture of Akko (Acre) prison, a medieval fortress that not even Napoleon had succeeded in capturing. In the last days of the British mandate, it captured a large part of the city of Yafo (Jaffa).
On July 22, 1946, the Irgun blew up a wing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem, killing 91 soldiers and civilians (British, Arab, and Jewish). On April 9, 1947, a group of Irgun commandos raided the Arab village of Dayr Yasin (modern Kefar Shaul), killing all 254 of its inhabitants.
After the creation of Israel in 1948 the Irgun's last units disbanded and took the oath of loyalty to the Israeli defense forces on Sept. 1, 1948. Politically, it was the precursor of the Herut (Freedom) Party, one of Israel's most militant right-wing groups, later merged with the Liberals into the Gahal Party. See also Stern Gang.
The Irgun was armed and financed by the government of Poland as a way of moving its Jews out of Poland to Palestine.
To blame the Wahhbites that they spread subversion is like to blame mosquitos that they bite. They just cannot do otherwise without losing their purpose for existence.
The real culprits are the people like Zbigniew Brzezinski who think that Wahhabi subversion is a great tool for the Big Game against the Russia (and Russian friends like Serbs). But mosquitos seem to have no sense of direction and bite their sponsors too.
Great Polish general Anders, who managed to extract 100 000 people from the Gulag, to form Polish Army and take it out of the Soviet Union helped Jews too. He insisted that Stalin allows Anders to include also officers and soldier of Jewish origin (if they were from Poland). Later when army of Anders was in the Middle (Near) East he allowed then to "desert" and prevented the British prosecution against the deserters. That way Jewish paramilitary organisations in the Palestine gained many experienced and trained men. (Some of the the Jews in his army remainded though to the end of the war, and Anders was extremely thankful for their commitment to the Polish cause).
Example: Abie now wants to label some frat boys as criminal for being silly at a party. Just think, the CIA hired this guy to teach them 'sensitivity training'.
You are quite correct. I DID NOT cheer on the butchery of Sabra and Shatilla. My statement . . .
. . . was unclear. Up to Sabra and Shatilla I was, without question, in Israel's corner. Sharon was my hero.I cheered for Israel every time she kicked Aaaarab ass. I cheered Sharon.Sabra and Shatilla was the watershed event, though I did not know it at the time . . .
In the years following Sabra and Shatilla I have reassessed my sentiments.
More like to Madagascar not to Palestine.
ACTIVITIES IN EUROPE BEFORE WORLD WAR TWO
More than three million Jews, concentrated mainly in the large towns, lived in Poland in the 1930s. In Warsaw, for example, Jews constituted one-third of the population. The Polish government, worried by the increase in Jewish influence in the country, not only did nothing to hinder the illegal immigration movement which the Revisionists organized in Poland, but actively assisted it.
In 1936, Jabotinsky met with the Foreign Minister, Josef Beck, and created the infrastructure for collaboration. The Polish government hoped that the establishment of a Jewish state would lead to mass emigration of Jews, thus solving the Jewish problem in Poland. In November 1937, Avraham Stern (Yair), then secretary of the Irgun General Headquarters, arrived in the Polish capital armed with a letter of recommendation from Jabotinsky. He met with senior government officials and laid the practical foundations for cooperation between the Polish army and the Irgun Zvai Le'umi. Within the framework of this cooperation, Polish army representatives handed over to Irgun representatives weapons and ammunition which had been kept in special ammunition depots. The weapons remained under Polish army supervision until they were despatched to Eretz Israel. Some of the weapons were concealed in the false bottoms of crates in which the furniture of prospective immigrants was transported, or in the drums of electrical machines. When the consignments reached Eretz Israel, they were taken to a safe place, and the weapons were removed from their hiding place.
When in Warsaw Avraham Stern was much helped by Dr. Henryk Strasman, a well known lawyer and an officer in the Polish Reserve force. His wife Alicja (Lilka) was also of great help. The Strasmans introduced Stern to the Polish intellectuals and high officials. It was in their home that the preparations for the publication of the Polish periodical "Jerozolima Wyzwolona" (Free Jerusalem) were begun. It was Lilka who designed the cover - A map of Eretz Israel with the background of an arm holding a gun and the words in Hebrew: "" (This Way Only). This became later the symbol of the Irgun.
In March 25,1939, senior Irgun commanders from Eretz Israel participated in a course held in the Carpathian mountains, instructed by Polish army officers. The course took place under conditions of great secrecy, and the instructors wore civilian clothing. The participants were not permitted to establish contact with local Jews, and the letters they wrote home were sent to Switzerland, inserted in new envelopes, re-addressed to France, and finally posted from there to Palestine. The trainees received military training and were taught tactics of guerilla warfare.
When the course ended, they returned to Eretz Israel, apart from three who remained in Poland: Yaakov Meridor, who was responsible for despatching the weapons received from the Polish army; Shlomo Ben Shlomo, who organized a commanders course for selected members of Irgun cells in Poland (Isaac Raviv was one of the participants), and Zvi Meltzer, who organized a similar course in Lithuania.
The organization of clandestine Irgun cells in Europe had begun a year previously, and was mainly conducted among members of Betar. The plan was to train a cadre of fighters, who would immigrate to Eretz Israel illegally, bringing arms with them, to become a kind of commando corps. Avraham Stern was involved in organizing the Polish cells, and was assisted by Nathan Friedman-Yellin (member of the Irgun commission in Poland) and Shmuel Merlin (General Secretary of the New Zionist Organization in Poland).
The first course for Irgun commanders in Poland was held in the fall of 1938 and was headed by Aharon Heichman (a member of the Irgun General Headquarters), who was sent specially from Palestine for this assignment. Twenty four members of Polish "cells" took part in the course, which was conducted in complete secrecy. The Polish police, whilst aware of what was going on, did not intervene nor did they ask questions about the gunfire heard in the area.
