President Disagrees With Preacher's Anti-Islam Remarks

President Bush is distancing himself from Franklin Graham after the preacher and close ally of the Bush family recently called Islam "wicked and violent." According to "NBC News," Graham reiterated his comments Friday, the first day of Ramadan, the holiest season of the Muslim year.

Speaking after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Graham had commented, "I don't believe this is a wonderful, peaceful religion." The president of Samaritan's Purse, a Christian relief agency, added: "When you read the Koran and you read the verses from the Koran, it instructs the killing of the infidel, for those that are non-Muslim."

"NBC News" reported Friday that when asked to clarify his statement, Graham repeated his charge that Islam, as a whole, was evil. "It wasn't Methodists flying into those buildings, it wasn't Lutherans," he said. "It was an attack on this country by people of the Islamic faith."

However, the White House disagreed with Graham's remarks, saying the president "views Islam as a religion that preaches peace," and that the terrorists do not represent what Islam teaches. "NBC News" said the Bush administration "continues to be careful about what it says concerning the religion of Osama bin Laden."

Meanwhile, according to "The (London) Daily Telegraph," President Bush -- eager to improve America's reputation in the Muslim world -- was today due to welcome 50 ambassadors from Islamic countries for a traditional meal and prayer at the White House to mark Ramadan.

It is believed to be the first time that Muslims were to participate in a formal ceremony in the official home of American presidents. In another unprecedented event, the Muslim chaplain of Georgetown University last week officiated at the opening prayers of the House of Representatives on Capitol Hill, the "Telegraph" reported.

But it is Graham's "very harsh words for the Muslim faith" that is causing the most negative attention for the Bush administration, "NBC News" said. "A presidential friend and supporter now finds himself at odds with both the Muslim world and the message from the White House," "NBC News" observed.

The son of Billy Graham and the designated successor of the longtime evangelist's ministry, Graham is considered one of America's most powerful Christian leaders. He delivered the benediction at Bush's inauguration and his father has counseled a long list of presidents.

"But now Franklin is in trouble with political friends for comments made recently, calling the entire Islamic religion "wicked, violent and not of the same God." "NBC News" said. "There is fallout from such remarks [initially] made last month."

Following the NBC report, Graham said at the weekend: "It is not my primary calling to analyze Islam or any other religions, though I recognize that all religions have differences. In the past, I have expressed my concerns about the teachings of Islam regarding the treatment of women and the killing of non-Muslims, or 'infidels.'" He said that he did not intend to comment further.

I noticed that nobody disputed the tenets Franklin's arguements, they are just distancing thenselves. I have not come to a solid conclusion on Islam, but I have not heard anyone effectively counter the arguements the Franklin and others make.

Bush believes he has to avoid alienating all Muslims, but he is compromising by doing that. It is a hate-filled religion.

I have gained respect for Franklin Graham for the has the knowledge and the courage that he needs to stand for Christ. Some of us say we follow Christ, but we do not uphold him and stand for him when our tests come. What if we gain the whole world, and abandon Jesus?

I'm glad that Franklin Graham spoke up, although he'll be attacked by the ACLU and all the Muslim raqueteer groups.

Forget that the leaders of Islam have refused to publicly condemn or distance themselves from the terrorists to any large degree. Pick on the Christian again. Same old story. I understand Bush's actions for political purposes but don't agree with them one bit. For that matter hasn't he called the terrorists "evil"? Unless the Muslim world also recognizes them as evil then they are with them. How can he have it both ways?

Graham should breathe easier for the distance, the air is cleaner away from politics.

Muslims could have avoided this if a large contingent of imams came out right after September 11th and condemned the act. They didn't and they still haven't. In fact, many of them said we had it coming.

Graham is in a position where he can openly speak his mind.
The President is not, even if he feels that way.

Franklin Graham must have a very sound reason to come out publicly with such a statement. Presuming that he has spent his lifetime on personal spiritual growth, he has a much more vast storehouse of knowledge in these things than we average folk, and likely is much more credible saying these things than we would be. That said, the scary thought that keeps crossing my mind is "What if he is 100% RIGHT???" Could he be prophesying, and no one is listening???

"Bush believes he has to avoid alienating all Muslims, but he is compromising by doing that. It is a hate-filled religion." Walking on broken glass and keeping it all politically correct... Unfortunately, by the time the truth is finally recognized it might be too late. I recall reading more than one news article during the year prior to September 11 giving warnings of a terrorist attack in the US and how unprepared we are/were. Will we ever learn.....

I have come to a solid conclusion and there are no good arguments to be countered especially from a Christian point of view. I can almost guarantee you that Franklin Graham has received death threats as does many who are brave enough to speak the thruth about Islam.
I know two very well known Christians, one who has a TV show and one who is a Christian scholar and regularly debates well know Islam religous leaders.
Both have spoken out against Islam the way that Franklin has, as a matter of fact the scholar has written many books on the truth about Islam one was even mentioned by Don Imus the other day on his show.
Both these Christians take very strong security measures because of all the death threats they have received over the years on a daily basis. One even has full time body guards because of the death threats.
From what both of them have taught me and personally told me about Islam and the threats I have heard and read, there is no one that can convince me that Islam is a religion of peace.

Jesus is "the Way, the Truth, the Life." Islam is a false religion; why cater to it? If Bush can't say that, at least Franklin can. Thanks, FG; tell the truth, let politicos and the utterly deceived wallow in "diplomacy".....

Right. And who are we to judge bin Laden for that matter? Call the bombers back home and let's turn the other cheek, which I suppose in this context would mean let the good and peaceful Islamics take a shot at Los Angeles as well. [ /sarcasm]

What could be more clear? Why is there any controversy?
