A Love Letter to Ted Koppel Or Is It Poison Pen?
Nightline, Ted Koppel (11/21/01) ^ | 11/22/01 | Ajay

Posted on 11/22/2001 3:34:02 PM PST by AJAY

Ajay sent the following letter to Ted Koppel of Nightline after his Nightline program of 11/21/01:

To: Ted Koppel specifically and to ABC News generally:

I've watched Nightline from the beginning with those fascinating " hostages in Iran" stories. But the program has been in continuous decline in the last few years. It started with a real journalist but has become a vehicle for Ted Koppel's ego and political views. Tonight's (Wednesday's) program was a disgrace--on a sensitive national security issue, you essentially had three people in a discussion, all obviously critical of President Bush's emergency policies which only are applicable to non-citizens and provide greater security for the lives of all those living in America. Wasn't it possible to get Joe DiGenova, his wife Gloria, Jonathan Turley, or dozens of others that the Federalist Society could have referred you to? Or even just a guest who might have voted for President Bush? Is this what you call fair and balanced journalism?

I have noticed that whenever an issue about conflicts between Black and White racial groups is discussed on Nightline, Ted Koppel is shamelessly biased in favor of Black complaints and generally oblivious to the grievances of Whites. Most Americans reject racial preferences but even when their position is indicated on Nightline, it is placed at considerable disadvantage. On several other issues, Mr. Koppel almost always is sympathetic to the "Blame America" positions found on the upper west side of NY City, Hollywood, San Francisco, Berkeley, Burlington and some other mostly college towns. This is a big country, Ted!--but to be fair, at least you are more receptive to conservative positions than Peter Jennings who fits more comfortably into the "Hate America" crowd. Conservatives almost always go after CNN first but I believe that CNN is much more receptive to conservative positions than ABC which clearly is the most biased of all the broadcast networks. You people badly are in need of a Tim Russert, clearly a Democrat but one who eschews the advocate journalism one gets drowned in at ABC News. "This Week" keeps elevating a political hit-man like George Stephanopoulos while firing Bill Kristol, a brilliant and clear-headed thinker, clearly more intelligent than Curious George. Kristol happily, now, is sought out by all of your competitors to your considerable disadvantage--and I'm one who doesn't agree with much of what Kristol says. ABC also forced out Bob Zelnick, one of its most competent and balanced reporters. You have kept George Will--the only one of your on-air faces that voted for President Bush, unless there, surprisingly, is someone else who I have missed entirely. And your great leader, David Westin, who has become a giant target of national ridicule and scorn, doesn't even have the wit to keep his mouth shut when he so clearly is very confused. He doesn't have a clue to keeping quiet when his every word seems to be self-destructive. I guess Michael Eisner can't find the time to do something about Westin or even Bill Maher, clearly the most mean-spirited face on television. Eisner is too busy building his fortune even larger while he shamelessly lets the Disney shareholders take a terrible and sustained beating.

And finally back to Ted Koppel:
"Upon what meat doth this our Caesar feed,
That he is grown so great?"

Please don't argue with my claim that ABC is even more biased than CNN. CNN may be the Clinton News Network but ABC is more like Taliban Radio.
Why does George Will want to lend credibility to ABC by playing their token conservative? Does he not object to working under George Stephanopoulos when either Sam or Cokie are away from the program? Did he object at all to the firings of Bill Kristol or Bob Zelnick? Will Will (George) comment on ABC President David Westin's remark suggesting that the suicide bombers of the Pentagon were not terrorists since the Pentagon is a military target? Cannot George Will do much better for our country by not serving as a "useful idiot" for ABC and its president, David Westin, the most perfect fool? Finally, Peter Jennings should be detained just as all the other al Qaeda suspects in this country. If he protests, just deport him to his native Canada and never let him come back.

I agree completely with your assessment of the bias at ABC, especially on Nightline and Politically Incorrect.
Your letter said a lot of things that needed saying!
Still, I hope George Will stays - he's the only thoughtful voice on that program!

When you realize that the vast majority of those in mainstream media are bolsheviks and that they use bolshevik tactics (which is to lie, lie, lie and lie) you'll realize that it does no good to write to them. To them the truth, objectivity or reason is absolutely irrelevant to their cause. And their cause is to divide American citizens to the point where we are easily defeated. 9/11 united us for a short time but the media is busy dividing us again.

Nightline started THE DAY AFTER THE BOMBING, 9-12, with disgusting anti-US propaganda, of the "we asked for it, and we caused these nuts to fly the planes into the WTC" variety...I could NOT believe what I was watching.

It was openly arrogant and condescending, not to mention filled with half truths. A damned shame that the airwaves we lease to ABC are used in that fashion. It was so bad, I can't describe how bad it was, it must be seen to be believed. At one point, after a story, it appeared that even Koppel was stunned at the slanted nature of the story. You've seen it, it's apparent to more than just me.

I can't believe how bad they are, particularly Peter Jennings, who I really believe hates our country. I sometimes think I must be making it up.

I'm torn on that one--the network is so bad that it is beyond redemption but I enjoy seeing Will use his greater intelligence to keep the others on "This Week" on a bit of a leash.

I know that but it's a good excuse for posting it here and spreading the warning about ABC through a kind of chain letter.

My experience exactly--it's like a nightmare.

Now to my turkey dinner on the west coast. I'll be back later to say more about The "American" Broadcasting Company.

I prefer to call it a tirade. You know how it is--some people object to the fan dancer while others object to the fan.

Listen to waxlaw, AJAY. You can't convert the left. They are what Thomas Sowell called the self-proclaimed anointed. The left-progressives-Democrats are basically totalitarian fundamentalists who want to impose their social vision on people like you and me who just want to enjoy freedom. But that will never do for them. They know better. They are superior. They are the anointed. (sarcasm)Come to think of it, they remind me of Bill O'Reilly.

...Joe DiGenova, his wife Gloria,...

Just wondering - - I thought Joe was married to Victoria Toensing.

It might even hurt his feelings since he prides himself on being "objective and fair," imagine that!

Thanks, but it is you who thought of it. I just was talking about what happens to me when I watch the program. It all starts when they announce the guests. They have so many guests who clearly voted for Gore and so very few who might have voted for Bush. Last night, they had former columnist Haynes Johnson, an embittered old New Deal liberal; a leftie lady professor from Stanford Law School, and the "objective" Teddy boy, himself. You would think they'd want to make their intentions less obvious--but their advocate journalism seems to get the better of them. Anyway, I like YOUR renaming of Nightline.

You are absolutely correct--a senior moment in the wee hours of the night-morning when I decided that I have to rant and rave at that night's Nightline before I sleep. I was not at all confident in my spelling of "Toensing" so I had to get her named through her husband's name. Then, I'll be darned, I mixed up "Victoria" and "Gloria." I've watched the wife and husband for years, both of them highly intelligent and tough. I'd like to have either of them represnting me in a tough battle. My only disappointment with them was when they represented Clinton's co-conspiritor on the Oval-Office OJ's corrupt pardon of Marc Rich. (Jack Quinn).

I could have used you as an editor in the wee hours. Anyway, this error of mine will be the least of their complaints, should they ever read this letter.

The point is not to convert them but to expose them, and you can't deny that this can be done. Look at CNN: all kinds of non-conservatives now will joke about the Clinton News Network--it has become part of the American vernacular. Things are so bad that their new president went to Tom DeLay and Dick Armey for advice on how CNN can become more acceptable to conservatives (not a joke!). My answer: Let Fox take you over.

By the way, I can't stand Bill O'Reilly either. Both he and Chris Matthews are shameless self-promoters, and they certainly are not conservatives. Chris Matthews' book party, at the home of leftist-flack Margaret Carlson, was covered on C-Span. I recognized lots of people there and could not find one who I ever could believe voted against Gore. Well, maybe Alan Greenspan who accompanied his wife, Andrea Mitchell, to the book party for a short time.

On second thought, I heard somewhere that Greespan doesn't vote at all.

LOL, neither does Jim Lehrer of PBS. He thinks this keeps it fair (even if he does have a state-funded, nightly news program to advance the left's agenda).
