BEIRUT, Nov 23 (AFP) - Lebanon's fundamentalist Shiite spiritual leader, Sheikh Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah, said in an interview published Friday that alleged terrorist Osama bin Laden does not represent Islam.
"Bin Laden is not the leader of the Muslim world and does not represent Islam. We have considerable reservations about his line of thought, his ideas and his way of acting," he told the weekly al-Moharrer.
"He has his own convictions, but he practises his faith along erroneous lines, profiteering from the oppression suffered in the Muslim world and from the ill will harboured towards the United States," Sheikh Fadlallah added.
The cleric, who supports Iran's reformist president Mohammad Khatami, also said that bin Laden could not proclaim a jihad, or holy war.
"To proclaim a jihad remains the right only of he who leads the people. No (ordinary) Muslim, no matter how influential he may be, can have the right to proclaim a jihad," he said.
"Furthermore, in Islam, jihad is not war, but an invitation to others to join with Islam," he said.
Sheikh Fadlallah was one of the first Islamic clerics to condemn the anti-US attacks of September 11, which he said left him "horrified," despite his disagreements with the United States.
His supporters accuse the CIA (US Central Intelligence Agency) of being behind a car bomb attack from which he escaped unscathed, but left some 80 people dead in the southern suburbs of Beirut near his home in 1988.

"Considerable reservations"? He should be actively supporting the U.S. then.
It is clear that he, and his folowers admired Bin Laden, and wished him well, until Teheran told them to speak differently.
kangharue:
Are you bin Laden's evil twin?
Toadies.
That !! was Before Jesus the Christ, the Messiah was born ! Puuuuulease Stop "selecting" scripture from the OT that suits your agenda and not the Lord's. Your quote was from the OT when we were under "the law". Which no longer applies. We are freed from the law from from Jesus. It also states in the OT to "kill" homosexuals.
Please find scripture from the NT that fits your agenda and post it here. I would be interested in seeing what you found.
No, but his actions sure DO represent islam!
kangharue:
Yeah? how so?
(From Patterns of Global Terrorism) http://web.nps.navy.mil/~library/tgp/qaida.htm Al-Qaida: ...Current goal is to establish a pan-Islamic Caliphate throughout the world by working with allied Islamic extremist groups to overthrow regimes it deems "non-Islamic" and expelling Westerners and non-Muslims from Muslim countries. Issued statement under banner of "the World Islamic Front for Jihad Against the Jews and Crusaders" in February 1998, saying it was the duty of all Muslims to kill US citizens--civilian or military--and their allies everywhere.
The quran is filled with thing like these following quotes and muslims do take them seriously!
I shall cast terror into the hearts of the infidels. Strike off their heads, maim them in every limb. (Quran 8:12)
Muhammad is Allahs apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another
Through them Allah seeks to enrage the unbelievers. (Quran 48:29)

Surah 8:12 is speaking about the Battle of Badr(Muslims vs pagan Arabs)....something that happened in 6th century Arabia. It's no different than the many violent passages in the Old Testament.
"Muhammad is Allahs apostle. Those who follow him are ruthless to the unbelievers but merciful to one another Through them Allah seeks to enrage the unbelievers." (Quran 48:29)
The unbelievers here are again, the pagan Arabs. Why is this so offensive? The Old Testament contains many such passages.
