These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will,
in this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands it now,
deserves the love and thanks of man and woman...... Let if be told to the future world, that in the depth of winter,
when nothing but hope and virtue could survive, that the city and the country,
alarmed at the one common danger, came forth to meet and repulse it!

I was gonig through old magazines prior to getting rid of them, and I found a story in an issue of Reader's Digest (December 2000) about George Washington's daring Christmas Crossing of the Delaware that turned the tide of the American Revolution. In the article, it ran this excerpt from one of Thomas Paine's essay's from that time. I couldn't believe how appropriate it is again today, over 200 years later!
Truly our forefathers were divinely inspired in their work to form this nation!!!

Yea, Verily. That is why it disturbs me so to run in to so many people who haven't a clue as to what they wrote, what they thought, and what they believed.
Benjamin Rush, one of Tom Jefferson's correspondents, and cosigner of the Declaration, while discussing proper schooling for American children, thought that religion should be a part of their education. He also said that he would rather that they learned about "Mohamedianism" than get no religious training at all. (naturally, he would prefer Christian training, but also knew the difficulties of coming up with something acceptable to all the American Christian sects.)Tom Jefferson disagreed, and eventually carried the day...
