Windows is the most popular package, so with regard to writing software, I am selecting Word as the topic. Even so, feel free to comment/inquire about any other.
Problems and/or questions with Word...?
Tips that you have which others might not realize (mail merge, personalized set-up, inserting pictures beside paragraphs...

Corel's Word Perfect's a whole lot more user-friendly and, therefore, my word-processor of choice. However, with Micro-soft's domination of the home soft-ware marketplace, I've had both installed on my computer for quite a while. I find it's easier to simply switch back and forth, especially since I usually go into Word only to read documents sent to me, than to bother with conversion. My wife's employer mandates Word so she uses it when she brings work home with her. For initial composition, for me, it's Word Perfect!

Other writing software worth considering (Word Perfect...)? If one stays within a fixed group of users exchanging documents there are other choices. As you said, WordPerfect, is one. Sun's Star Office is free. There are also LaTex and Nisus (Mac only),
One does not have much choice if one exchanges documents with 'unknown users', since MS Word has become the lingua franca - at least for the time being. Maybe somebody will write a 'free XTML' word processor for multiple platforms.

so with regard to writing software
...so, do you intend to create text for humans or code for machines?
I've used Word to write basic programs and basic (hpl) to build a word processor...

I hate to break it to you, but real programmers use vi.

Many people still run off of a CO at 42k, so what?

I hate to break it to you, but real programmers use vi. Or emacs (I prefer vi). In Windows I prefer WordPad which has all the features I need and comes with the system
